Follow The Money: The market speaks for Words at The Curragh

Will Aidan O'Brien saddle the winner of the Irish Oaks?
Will Aidan O'Brien saddle the winner of the Irish Oaks?

Today's Follow The Money comes from the flat meetings at Newbury, Curragh and the jumps meeting at Market Rasen.

"What with the Tabor and Magnier combination owning the first two in the betting we are hopeful the money move for Words is significant."

Back Words @ 4.67/2 in the 17:50 at The Curragh

We start off today's Follow The Money with the 13:45 2m Juvenile Hurdle at Market Rasen. The John Ferguson-Aidan Coleman combination has an impressive strike rate of 60% at Market Rasen and we are hoping they add to that record with Mountainside today, who currently trades at 1.774/5 from a high of 2.111/10. As with many Ferguson horses Mountainside is an ex-Godolphin flat horse. Placed in two maidens last year and a winner here on his first hurdle start Mountainside seemed to get the hang of things late on, taking the lead within the last 75 yards of the race. Dominada finished second in that race , and has since franked the form so we are hopeful of starting today's column with a winner.

Consort was trading at 2.0421/20 earlier today in the 14:35 1m2f listed race at Newbury, but is now at 2.245/4 and we are opposing this lightly raced Sir Michael Stoute horse on the back of that drift. We last saw Consort being beaten three lengths into third by Gleneagles, but that was over 1m and today he steps up in distance to 1m2f. He is also making his debut against older, more experienced, horses. With Roger Varian in a good vein of form at the moment (Intilaaq) and the slight support in the market for Fire Fighting we feel there is enough doubt about Consort to oppose him as short odds.

We move to the 17:50 at The Curragh (Irish Oaks) for our last positive of the day. Aidan O'Brien has won this race four times since 2006 and he goes into battle with four out of the ten strong field. The shortest price out of their four is Words - 4.67/2 in from 5.49/2 - who comes to this race with two wins from two races. This is obviously a step up on her group 3 win at Cork last month but we think this horse still has plenty of improvement in her. The danger to Words could come in the form of David Wachman's trained horse and favourite Curvy. Trading at 3.55/2, Curvy has drifted out from a low of 3.02/1 in what is a well-formed market. Curvy is also unbeaten as a three-year-old and arrives off an impressive win in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot beating this year's Irish 1000 Guineas winner Pleascach into second. What with the Tabor and Magnier combination owning the first two in the betting we are hopeful the money move for Words is significant.
