Today's Follow The Money comes from the meeting at Punchestown...
We kick off today's recommendations with our lay selection, which comes from the 13:55 2m Maiden Hurdle at Punchestown. The Gordon Elliott-trained Knockmaole Boy has seen little support in the market this morning, with his early price of 2.01/1 drifting out to now hovering around the 2.245/4 mark. The five-year old looked decent when finishing second a fortnight ago, but his price has been slashed on that performance and we feel that he shouldn't be as short as 2.245/4 today. There aren't many here with credentials but this 21-runner maiden hurdle could throw up a surprise from the pack and Davy Russell's mount Agent Boru looks smart enough, placing in three of his last four starts. We feel Knockmaole Boy's lack of experience over obstacles could be an issue here today, with the more experienced second favourite expected to be the main threat.
We stay at Punchestown for our back selection, which comes in the 2m6f Maiden Hurdle at 16:00. Preference is for the David O'Brien-trained mare Freeway Space. She is a point-to-point winner over three miles and has been placed in her last three starts, all of which were over a similar trip to today's contest. She was unlucky to bump into a useful looking Elliott horse last time out at Thurles and would have a good chance today if she can recreate that performance. Punters have identified her consistent form and we feel that today will be day that she goes one better and gets her first win on the board. Paul Townend is booked for the ride again and connections will be disappointed if this seven-year-old mare isn't first past the post. Early prices of 4.3100/30 have been snapped up with her current price sitting at 3.3512/5, we still see value here however and a back bet is recommended.
We finish today's selections with our each-way punt of the day. We continue at 17:10 in Punchestown for the lucky last, a 2m Flat race. Our preference is for the Tom Taaffe-trained Riders Onthe Storm. The four-year old ran in to a respectable fourth on his race debut a month ago in Naas, in what looked to be a competitive bumper. The runner-up that day has gone on to an easy win in Leopardstown since, further enhancing the form from that bumper. The son of Scorpion surely has much room for improvement and punters think that could well be on display on his second start today. Backers are sweet enough on this young gelding with his early price of 7.87/1 being snapped up, his current price is sitting at 5.85/1 and we think that at this price he is still a great each-way shot-to-nothing with it seeming unlikely he finishes outside the places here today.
