Today's three Follow The Money bets come from Newton Abbot.
"Mount Vesuvius has won off far higher marks in the past and although that was a while ago now, the handicapper has clearly given him a chance and he ought to be capable of featuring in this modest grade on his preferred quick ground."
We start with the opening 2m5f Maiden Hurdle, at 14:15, in which Beau Phil has been weak in the betting, wandering out to [3.9] from [3.05]. Paul Nicholls' five-year-old has consistently gone close without winning over hurdles and may miss out once again. The gelding has got himself into some winning positions before failing to find anything extra at the finish and that is a worrying trend now after nine starts. He posted a fair effort last time over course and distance but a similar performance is unlikely to be good enough conceding 7lbs to Peter Bowen's fancied Princess Roania.
Mount Vesuvius has attracted plenty of interest in the following race on the card, the 14:45 2m Handicap Chase, now trading at [6.2] from [9.0]. Paul Henderson's eight-year-old returned from a break at Stratford earlier this month and was understandably a little rusty, but with the cobwebs now blown away the selection can have more of a say in things. The gelding has won off far higher marks in the past and although that was a while ago now, the handicapper has clearly given him a chance and he ought to be capable of featuring in this modest grade on his preferred quick ground.
Finally, Lady Robyn has been well backed, from [4.2] into [2.9], for the closing 2m1f Maiden NHF race at 17:30.
Peter Bowen's promising six-year-old is yet to run under rules but has shown enough in Irish points to suggest he can figure prominently here. A string of second places over 3 miles in that sphere hints that staying chases might be his game in future but there seems to be enough ability there to pick up a few prizes like this along the way and this gamble on racecourse debut is worthy of serious attention.
