Follow The Money: Fahey can Spring a winner at Pontefract

We start today's column with a lay at Newton Abbot
We start today's column with a lay at Newton Abbot

Today's Follow The Money brings bets from the meetings at Newton Abbot, Pontefract and Hexham.

"Spring Offensive has done most of his best work over today's distance and comes in off the back of a respectable season return at the Curragh last month. With the benefit of that run under his belt and Adam McNamara claiming 7lbs in the saddle we like his chances today."

Back Spring Offensive @ 3.9 in the 14:40 at Pontefract

Recommended Bets
Lay Amanto @ 2.3611/8 in the 13:50 at Newton Abbot
Back Joseph Mercer each-way @ 9.89/1 in the 16:00 at Hexham

We head to Newton Abbot first up for our negative which runs in the maiden hurdle at 13:50. We are opposing Amanto who has taken a walk out to 2.3611/8 from an early price of 1.768/11. This six-year-old gelding from the Paul Nicholls yard looked fairly promising when finishing second over hurdles last November at Taunton. While that effort does demand respect, in his last run over hurdles at Newbury he struggled to finish seventh in an eight runner race. It is also heartening to see him up against the well-supported Colin Tizzard-trained Muffins For Tea, who has come in to 2.8615/8 from 3.953/1.

Next we change codes to the flat for our first positive of the day which can be found in the 14:40 one mile handicap at Pontefract. The selection Spring Offensive is currently trading at 3.9 having started at an initial price of 6.411/2. This Richard Fahey-trained four-year-old has done most of his best work over today's distance and comes in off the back of a respectable season return at the Curragh last month. With the benefit of that run under his belt and Adam McNamara claiming 7lbs in the saddle we like his chances today. The going should not trouble him and with Fahey's respectable 21% course strike rate we recommend a back.

Finally we head to Hexham for our each-way back where we are supporting Joseph Mercer in the 16:00 handicap chase. This gelding has been encouragingly backed this morning and is now trading at 9.89/1 from an initial price of 14.5. He is making his sixth start over fences today, and the best of his previous efforts came over today's distance at Wetherby last December when second on soft ground. He is 16lbs better off today, and we feel he is certainly worth an each-way interest.
