Today's Follow The Money comes from the Friday afternoon meetings at Newbury, Doncaster and Cheltenham...
Kicking things off with our lay in the 13:20 at Newbury, a 6½f maiden, where the Barry Hills-trained Tanasoq has drifted from 2.3811/8 out to 2.789/5. This race doesn't appear to be the strongest on paper and, although Hills can get a horse ready first time out, there is stronger support for the more experienced and Brian Meehan-trained The Lillster, who is dropping in class. With a notable market drift on Tanasoq, a lay is the call.
Over to Doncaster for the 14:35 7f Maiden Stakes where the John Gosden-trained Royal Artillery has been heavily supported from 3.9 in to 2.829/5 on debut. This season, Gosden has sent out 38 two-year-old winners - a strike rate of 24% - and this son of War Front is sure to go close. Gosden and Frankie Dettori have an fantastic record together at Doncaster, boasting an excellent 30% strike rate (41-138) since 2011. Although currently vying for favouritism with the more experienced and Ralph Beckett-trained Night To Remember, we feel this Magnier, Tabor and Smith owned runner is one to have on side.
Finally to Cheltenham for the 15:20 3m Handicap Hurdle, where the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Mr Shantu has been supported from around 5.85/1 in to 5.14/1. This six-year-old has been revitalised since being upped in trip, following up his win in a 2m7f Handicap at Worcester with an easy victory at Warwick over 3m 2f in September. Although he has been upped 10lbs for that victory, the form has been franked by the victory of the well held sixth horse in that race, which shows that this is a horse that is improving fast enough to defy the rise in the weights. Jockey Patrick Cowley claims 7lbs and he is sure to go close.
