Welcome to today's Follow The Money, which comes from this afternoons meetings at Lingfield and Ludlow...
Our first selection of the day comes from the second race at Lingfield (13:40) in which Toledo has been a warm order all morning and has seen his price contract from 7.4013/2 in to 5.409/2. The Richard Hannon-trained bay colt, who has only raced three times, is making his handicap debut today. He has run well in all three outings (the last two at this track) and was well supported in the market on each occasion. The form for his second start, over today's six furlong trip, looks rock solid; he finished less than three lengths behind the winner that day and the third-placed horse (Time Warp) has subsequently won four times and has a rating of 100.
On that basis, Toledo seems well-in at the weights for today's contest. His last race saw him upped in trip to seven furlongs where he made good headway at the halfway stage and seemingly travelled nicely two out, only to fade into third place in the final furlong. A return to today's six furlongs looks ideal for him and we feel confident in choosing him for our win bet of the day.
For our lay of the day we stay at the all-weather track for 14:10 race where Muaithir has been easy to back throughout the morning, resulting his price to drift from 1.8910/11 out to 2.6813/8. This is the first outing for the John Gosden three year old, who cost 475,000 guineas as a yearling, and is a well bred colt and obviously well thought of - he is still entered for this year's Derby. However, the market today suggests it may be worth looking elsewhere for the winner of this four runner race. His two main opponents - King Of Dreams and Cachao (our lay's stable companion) also boast good pedigrees and although neither have shown much on the racecourse so far, we feel the ten furlongs today we will see improved performances from the both, certainly enough to trouble the debutant.
Our each-way selection comes from the jumps card at Ludlow where Rainbow Haze has been steadily supported in the 15:30, from 8.07/1 in to 4.707/2. The ground conditions today (heavy) will suit our selection perfectly, he won impressively at Chepstow at today's marathon three mile trip in November on going similar to today's, beating Moon Trip by seven lengths with the third over 20 lengths behind. Although he has risen 10lbs for that victory we still feel he is well treated and expect to see him staying on strongly at the business end of this competitive handicap to give his backers a great run for their money.
