Back Fire Tree @ 4.507/2 in the 17:00 at Lingfield

We kick off with a lay recommendation on former Triumph Hurdle favourite Landofhopeandglory in the 13:45 at Fairyhouse. He was backed at 3.03 to good money initially, but is now freely available at 3.55. He won his first three outings over timber in good style, but was well held by Bapaume last time out. That seemed to confirm his limitations, and with the heavy ground he faces a likely major negative based on his flat form, he can be taken on this afternoon.

Our each-way fancy comes in the 15:35 at Kempton, the feature 3m Handicap Chase. The market is speaking in favour of the Paul Nicholls' trained Irish Saint as his price has contracted from 8.207/1 into 5.905/1. A classy novice chaser in the 2014/15 season, he actually won the Grade 2 Pendil Novice Chase at this track. He was upped to three miles for his final start of that season and showed a good deal of promise, only to then miss 18 months through injury. The handicapper has dealt him a fair hand, dropping him to mark of 149 from a peak of 153 during his enforced absence, and a further three pounds since. As just an eight year old, apparently retaining a good deal of his old ability in three runs this season, this looks an excellent opportunity for him to get back to winning ways.

We head to Lingfield for our final selection, where a back bet is recommended on Fire Tree in the 17:00. He was a 75 rated performer at his peak when previously trained in Ireland, and has now joined the Charlie Fellowes team which continues in fine form. Horses are generally elevated from an Irish mark when racing in England (see the recent Grand National furore as evidence) but this gelding has been dropped to a mark of 70 by the British assessor. Already a winner on a synthetic surface, he retains plenty of potential at a mile and a quarter. On his only try at the distance he was an excellent third to subsequent Irish Cesarewitch winner Laws Of Spin. He does have an absence to overcome, but a market move from 6.411/2 into 4.57/2 suggests he might well be ready today.
