Welcome to today's Follow The Money which comes from Haydock and Carlisle...
We start with the negative selection in the 14:00 at Haydock, where Raktiman has been easy to back, drifting from an early 5.79 out to 8.27/1. The nine-year-old gelding didn't tackle fences until October 2015 and although he won well last time out at Catterick (his fourth run over the larger obstacles), he carries a nine pound penalty for that victory and today's event looks a far more competitive affair with several experienced chasers in opposition. We feel that he may find a few too good for him today and with the lack of market confidence, we are happy to recommend a place lay on Raktiman at 2.8815/8.
We stay at Haydock for our each-way selection. Apterix in the 15:45 has been well supported all morning and seen his price contract from 13.5 in to 10.09/1. This is another highly competitive affair where a case can be made for most of the runners, however we like the way the Brian Ellison-trained gelding has run since his he returned from a five month break this season. His latest outing saw him confidently ridden to win a conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle over today's two mile trip, he likes to be held up, so this afternoon's field he should find plenty of cover before making his move. The going today should not inconvenience our selection and he teams up with jockey Gavin Sheehan who has a 18% success rate when riding for Ellison over the past five years, so this booking looks significant and we fully expect a bold showing from Apterix today to recommend an each-way bet at 10.09/1.
For our win bet we turn to Carlisle in the 16:05 race where we like the look of Charlie Wingnut. He has been a warm order for this handicap hurdle, which has seen him backed from 8.07/1 in to 6.05/1, and we feel the market confidence will be justified. He won two point-to-point races in Ireland before joining the Nicky Henderson stable where he showed some promise over hurdles. He is now trained by Sue Smith and has run two good races for his new yard after a four year absence, finishing runner up on both occasions over 2½ miles. He is tackling three miles today which will suit the nine year gelding, and he's running off bottom weight. What's more, his pilot, Stephen McCarthy takes another ten pounds off his back. We feel all these factors point to a victory today for Charlie Wingnut.
