Today's Follow the Money comes from the third day at Glorious Goodwood...
We start in the Goodwood Cup at 15:10 where Angel Gabrial has come in from 14.54 to 11.521/2. A real improver from the Richard Fahey yard this year, this five-year-old has put in five very solid efforts this year. His last two runs in particular have been exceptional - a fine second in the Chester Cup and then winning the Northumberland Plate easily, with possibly a bit in hand. He takes a big step up here into a Group 2 and faces the likes of Gold Cup second Estimate and fourth placed Brown Panther, proven performers at the top level. However the latter has had a tough campaign and the ground may be slightly too firm for him today, while Estimate had a tough race in the Gold Cup and has to prove his best form is not solely seen at Ascot where he does the vast majority of his racing. Angel Gabrial may well be the only runner towards the top of the market who has got both his optimum distance and ground and he is a hopeful selection.
Moving on to our lay in the 15:45 Langtry Stakes, where Gold Cup third Missunited has drifted from 2.962/1 out to 3.613/5. While she posted an extremely impressive effort in the Gold Cup, the run may well have taken a lot out of her. And while she has got a lot of experience at the trip today, others hold better form at this distance and perhaps have had a more structured route to this race. The main danger must rate as Talent, last year's Oaks winner. Although not showing her best form since that win she still has run some solid races in defeat and if she is back to her best, or anywhere near it, she should be the class animal in this race at the distance, especially with Richard Hughes on board. With these reasons in mind we are happy to take on Missunited today.
Finishing up with the biggest mover of the day in the 16:50 where Mark Johnston's Almargo has been very strong, moving from 10.09/1 in to 6.25/1. Unbeaten in seven furlong handicaps, he holds a very obvious chance for a yard which does so well at this meeting - it's notable that Joe Fanning prefers him of the two runners from the stable. Also in Almargo's favour are the conditions - his best efforts have come on good to firm ground - and the win at Epsom, showing he has no problems handling undulating tracks. Indeed Epsom form often translates well to Goodwood. A draw in stall five holds no fears and he should be able to break well and make all the running. Although bigger prices were available earlier we still feel that 6.25/1 is backable and are very keen to keep him on side today.
