The markets have been reviewed and today's three Follow The Money selections come from the meetings at Chester, Newcastle, and Newmarket...
We start the day with a lay as we look to take on the drifting favourite Steve Prescott, who runs in the 14:10 at Chester. A negative drift all morning has seen him slide from 1.271/4 all the way out to 1.618/13. Accounting for a non-runner that was prominent in the market, the main factors have to be his two main market rivals in the field. Mark Johnston's improving Indescribable picked up his first win last time out and has to be considered a contender but more interesting is the significant market support for local trainer Tom Dascombe's newcomer Showing Character: this yard likes a winner here, he looks well-bred and the significant market support could be telling. At such a short price we are happy to put this jolly up as our lay of the day.
Our next selection runs in the big handicap at Newcastle, the Northumberland Plate at 15:50, where there has been money for Dark Crusader. Well supported, this one has moved from a high of 13.73 in to a level 10.09/1. In what is no doubt a very competitive race this one's form from last season is quite interesting. Although his form tailed off from the back end of last season, the trip can be used as an excuse for his last three runs. Prior to those runs he was the winner of a hat-trick of races last summer including a win over 1m6f on soft ground, so the step up to two miles for this race shouldn't be an issue. Trainer A J Martin has bought this one over from Ireland to run in this and it is also worth noting that he won this race back in 2008. We're hoping the step up in trip and the market support for this one should get him back in to the winners enclosure.
Our final selection of the day we will look to back the well supported Seagull, who runs in the 16:40 at Newmarket. Early prices of 2.829/5 have been snapped up and she is now available to back at 2.1211/10. There is no doubt that this well bred filly has the potential of a bright career; after coming on from her disappointing debut to win here, she finished an unlucky second last time out. The step up to 1m4f should play in her favour and may help her reverse positions with Rosehill Artist. Trainer John Gosden has a decent 20% strike rate with his three-year-olds with jockey William Buick boasting an even more impressive 26% strike rate when teaming up with Gosden here at the Newmarket July course. With all this said punters should be confident of a prominent display from this one and hopefully a return to winning ways.
