The markets have been reviewed, and today's three Follow The Money selections come from the meetings at Newbury and Stratford...
We start with our lay of the day in the first race at Stratford. Me And Ben has seen a considerable drift this morning from a low of 2.226/5 out to a current price of 2.915/8 and we can see why.
The mare has had a long old year of it, having had 18 runs in just over 12 months. To be fair the most recent run was very good, a close second in a class 5 Handicap at Leicester. But she has now been raised 8lbs for that run to a career high of 105. Today she steps back up to class 4, so with such a big rise we really have to oppose her on that reason. Along with the fact she doesn't like getting her head in front by only ever winning once, we really want the other three runners to be on our side in this race. A lay of 2.915/8 looks to be a very good bet.
We could not have a Saturday afternoon without having a Venetia Williams Handicap runner on our side, and Pepite Rose is that horse being backed from a high of 13.5 in to 10.09/1 in the 14:20 at Newbury.
Despite being the outsider in the race, there is a lot to like about this seven-year-old. We start with her clear love for good ground at this time of year, racking up a four-timer at this point last season, the last of them wins being on this very card. Next is her love for Newbury, having two completed runs and two wins to her name. With regards to this season and the exception of the last run, with which she hated the ground, it has been a success. Winning her first start off 140 over two miles at Wetherby, then next time stepping up in class to finish 33 lengths behind Captain Chris at Kempton. Not a lot of shame in that. With her superb course form, love for good ground and the trainer's seasonal quest of mopping up Saturday handicaps, we suggest a back of 10.09/1 to be terrific value.
Our final back of the day runs in the 15:30 at Newbury for David Pipe. No Secrets has been the subject of strong backing this morning, starting at a high of 12.2 in to a current price of 9.28/1.
This 10-year-old has been very lightly raced for his age and is returning here off an 82 day break. That most recent run was a fairly disappointing 5th of 6 at Taunton, but we are willing to give him the benefit of doubt for that as he blundered quite a few fences on the heavy ground, strange for a usually competent jumper. His first start this season is the one we a interested in, he was fourth in a very competitive Handicap here on Hennessy Gold Cup day on good ground. The winner has since gone on to finish third in the Byrne Group at Cheltenham. Our selection comes into this race today 1lbs lower than that run and cheek pieces have now been applied. Along with the superb form of the stable and jockey we suggest a back of 9.28/1.
