It's a Haydock special today with all three of the Follow The Money selections coming from the Merseyside venue...
In the opening race at Haydock at 14:10 we find today's lay selection in the form of New Story who has eased from 1.84/5 out to 2.166/5. Ismail Mohammed's colt may be a surprising drifter to some given his facile victory at Salisbury last time out in Maiden company. There are plenty of reasons however to believe that his debut in handicap company will be a much tougher assignment than he was set that day.
The Roger Varian trained Idder must rank as the main danger with his latest fourth in a competitive looking Handicap at Doncaster being franked since with Billingsgate winning again at Sandown in a good looking handicap off a mark of 88. A mark of 80 then may underestimate Idder as he was only beaten by Billingsgate off 80 by roughly two lengths (Billingsgate off 82). Watersmeet may be the next threat for the Mark Johnston yard who have been in fine fettle recently and a 6lb rise for a routine victory last time might not be enough to stop him dominating proceedings from the front.
Next up in Haydock's 15:50 there has been a real plunge on Bryan Smart's Space Artist, his odds tumbling from an early 22.021/1 in to a current 15.014/1. Although disappointing last time this gelding does appear well handicapped on his best from, racing today off 76 and having won off 79 last year and placed off marks in the early 80's.
His penultimate run at Thirsk was a solid effort when not far behind Lastchancelucas in sixth place and it is possible that his most recent effort was in company that is slightly too hot for him. Today's race seems far more his level and it is worth noting that his last win came in similar circumstances to today having been recently well beaten in a handicap which looked too competitive. He should be fully fit today and it is not impossible he could take advantage of his falling mark. Looking at the size of the move and the still tempting price we feel he is well worth taking a chance on.
In the 16:25 at Haydock we find another interesting Mark Johnston horse, Maid In Rio, who has been well found in the market having crept in from 3.052/1 to 2.767/4. It's not hard to see why the market is so confident of her chance today with her last four runs being extremely solid with three wins followed up with a close third last time at Ascot.
Today's handicap looks much easier than that race and if she runs up to the form of that last run off a mark of 85, a mark which she remains on today, she should take some beating, especially with her main rivals Craggaknock and Kashmiri Sunset declared as early non-runners. The field does not seem to contain many dangers and we feel sure to get a good run from Maid In Rio despite top weight. She hopefully can keep up her own prolific form of present as well as that of her trainer.
