Welcome to Follow The Money, today hailing from this afternoon's meetings at Cheltenham and Doncaster...
Our first back runs in the 15:10 at Doncaster. Argus is proving a warm favourite, backed in from [5.97] he now trades at just [4.9], and Ralph Beckett's runner has the advantage of bottom weight and races for very powerful connections. He got off of the mark at Ripon in June and followed that up with a good Handicap win at Windsor in the style of a horse that could keep improving. He made a slightly lacklustre return to action at Newmarket earlier this month but he was well found in the betting at the top of the market and he may just have needed to blow away the cobwebs. He should strip fitter today and he can confirm his earlier promise for a yard that had an across-the-card double yesterday.
Our lay of the day runs in the 16:55 at Doncaster and Mick Channon's Scrutineer has been surprisingly weak in the market bouncing from [2.04] out to [2.3]. This is his Nursery debut having sauntered clear in his Nottingham maiden win last time out. The worry here is that he is stepping up in trip by a furlong and what did he actually beat when winning so impressively last time? Market principles Desert Ruler and Theos Lolly have both won over today's distance against horses which are clearly at this level of competition, and punters seem to be of the opinion that they are by far the safer option than the unknown quantity at a skinny price. We second that opinion and a lay is advised.
Our final selection today runs over at Cheltenham in the 17:05 and is the biggest move of the day. Susan Gardener's Heres Herbie has been hammered in the betting, trading at a high of [25.0] this morning he is now as short as [10.0]. He is another horse on Follow The Money today that slips in at the bottom of the weights in a handicap. Slipping down the weights on the back of some disappointing efforts he is now only 1lb higher than his last win at Exeter in 2014. He had a run on the 1st of this month after a few months off of the track and that should see him come on a lot today. Sue Gardner's only runner this fortnight was only just touched off at a big price at Exeter and it is possible that the yard is in good order and looking to capitalise. The market would certainly suggest a big run is expected and we are happy to sit up and take notice.
