In Fontwell's 15:10 2m6f Handicap Hurdle, Landenstown Star has been backed dramatically into 7.87/1 from 13.012/1. Tim Vaughan's seven-year-old is not a selection that leaps off the page at first glance, having never won from 14 starts and finished tailed off in his last two races. However, a number of factors suggest he may be capable of better this time. He is dropping down in trip after laboring badly over three miles, he has placed on heavy ground so can handle any cut. A tongue-tie will be worn for the first time, a mark of 85, down from the 90s, looks more workable and, although top weight on paper, his claiming jockey means he's not actually giving lumps away to everything else.

Cheltenham's 2m5f Novice Hurdle at 15:25 features a number of promising prospects for the season ahead. Village Vic has been attracting all the money this morning, now trading at 3.45 after being previously available at 4.84/1. Phillip Hobbs' five-year-old has the most solid form on offer, having finished a close second to a highly regarded type over course and distance last month. Conditions at the track yesterday looked quite testing so the fact he has won a Point on soft and a Bumper on heavy inspires confidence that he will be able to see off some decent rivals in a race which should provide plenty of pointers.

The 16:00 2m National Hunt Flat race closes the card at Cheltenham. The Liquidator has been alarmingly weak in the betting, drifting out to 4.84/1 from 3.55. The four-year-old was an expensive recruit into the Pipe yard over the summer after finishing second in a decent Fairyhouse bumper at the end of last season. He may well go on to do well for his new connections but the market suggests he will not necessarily be fully wound up for this. The ground will be softer than he has experienced and the opposition is not short of potential with a number of others coming into this boasting winning form and big price tags.
