Today's Follow The Money comes from the meetings at Lingfield and Catterick.
Our first back comes from the 14:00 at Lingfield, where the Chris Dwyer-trained Basil Berry has been backed from a high of 7.06/1 in to 5.04/1. The three-year-old has won twice off an official mark of 64, including over seven furlongs last time out at Lingfield just one week ago, so the drop down to six furlongs should not be a worry, although the 6lb penalty is a slight concern. He tends to be a smooth travelling type with a willingness to find more than expected for pressure in a finish. Hopefully having been kept in Class Six company today it gives backers every chance of tasting victory.
Our lay of the day is the Henry Daly-trained Vice Et Vertu who runs in the 14:45 at Catterick and is out to 2.3411/8 from a low 1.9620/21. He have to give 4lbs away to his nearest rival in the market, Classic Move, who has been supported in the market and it will be interesting to see who manages to dictate as they have both enjoyed bowling along at the front previously. Timeform have Vice Et Vertu 10lbs below on their adjusted ratings so the suggestion is he will have to show far more improvement than Classic Move and the market is suggesting this could be beyond him. There have also been a couple of nibbles in the market for some outsiders so a lay is our bet.
Our second back is also from Catterick, where Tim Walford trained-Big Sound has been backed from a high of 6.25/1 in to a current price of 4.03/1 in the 15:20. The seven-year-old loves soft going having won two of four attempts under those conditions and certainly put up his best performance on ratings last time ten days ago at Wetherby in a Class Five event. That was under a claimer in Grant Cockburn who is full value for his 7lbs. Admittedly he is stepping up in class but he should be able to cope as he will be given a sufficient test of stamina with plenty of prominent runners in this race and with Cockburn on board again today the market has suggested that we can all make a loud noise as we cheer him home over the winning line - hopefully in first place.
