Follow The Money: Betfair Chase day special!

We're backing Jonjo O'Neill's Taquin de Seuil today

Welcome to today's Follow The Money from Haydock's Betfair Chase day.

"strong> Barry Geraghty is the man for the big occasion and hopefully his decision to ride our selection was a good one and 5.39/2 about a horse who will absolutely love it out there is still excellent value."

Back Taquin Du Seuil @ 5.39/2 in the 15:00 at Haydock

Our first back of the day takes his chance in the 13:15 Better Odds With Betfair Price Rush Handicap Hurdle. Last week's Cheltenham winning Follow The Money selection Morito Du Berlais is turned out again quickly and has been very well backed. Having opened up at 5.85/1, this progressive hurdler is now around the 4.216/5 mark. The five-year-old who is two from two this season after a breathing operation in the summer is back on track only eight days after his last win with a 5lbs rise in the weights, he's clearly in form at home and takes his racing well. He must overcome similar conditions to last week and this is a slightly better quality of field. But he has to be considered ahead of the handicapper still, and as last week showed, he sure can battle. We fancy the gelding to stay on his upward curve so suggest a back of 4.216/5.

Next up is our lay of the day, and we are going for a place lay in the 13:50 Betfair Price Rush Hurdle. The horse we are very much against is the mud loving Jeremy Scott trained Melodic Rendezvous, who even after having his optimum ground conditions today has still drifted in the place market from 1.728/11 out to a current price of 1.845/6. At the price you would have to say that the favourite The New One is nailed on for a place is staying on his feet, so that leaves one place left. Of the remainder of the horses who will be on our side, all three have either won on soft or worse so ground conditions should not really hinder them. Hawk High and Williams Wishes also all receive weight from our lay, which may prove vital in these conditions. The trip of 2m may now be on the short side for Melodic Rendezvous  so we are taking a chance two of the youngsters are better suited to the trip. A place lay is suggested at 1.845/6 for a horse that may need the run.

We move now to the big race of the afternoon taking place at 15:00. The Betfair Chase is seen as the first big stepping stone on the road to the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. The 3m1f galloping race is normally a fast run all-out war of attrition, and today is going to be no different with the underfoot conditions making it pretty tough going out there. In terms of quality, last year's race was right up there as one of the best staying chases outside of the Cheltenham Festival in the last decade and with the first three home taking their chance again you would have to say this renewal is possibly just as good, even without Bobs Worth.

Since the declarations on Thursday the best backed horse is easily Jonjo O'Neill's Taquin Du Seuil, who has seen money from a high of 7.413/2 in to 5.39/2. The youngster had a very solid novice chase season last year, ending with a win in the JLT at the festival. The start of this campaign wasn't great, with a very average performance at Newton Abbot in an Intermediate Chase, but he followed that with a very encouraging run in the Charlie Hall at the start of the month, perhaps being ridden quietly to test he gets 3m. But it was clear to see that he certainly does, staying on past rivals to snatch second in the last stride. He does need to improve a stone today but with the ground soft and getting worse, this unbeaten on heavy ground 7yo is set up to run a brilliant race. Barry Geraghty is the man for the big occasion and hopefully his decision to ride our selection was a good one and 5.39/2 about a horse who will absolutely love it out there is still excellent value.
