Today's Follow The Money focuses solely on the racing from Catterick.
We look to get our negative out of the way early in the 14:30 Maiden Hurdle where we see Venue losing ground fast. He opened strongly at 1.68/13 but now trades at 3.55/2 and drifting further still as I write. Not seen since winning a turf flat race at Haydock back in September 2013 question marks remain over his ability. Interestingly, Venetia Williams has chosen to run Triumvirate here (her only runner here today) rather than facing her own sex in the 16:00 Novice Hurdle. It's not a foregone conclusion but there are enough signs to make Venue our lay-of-the-day.
Next we take a look at the 15:00 Maiden Hurdle where Beatu has been backed in to 3.814/5 from 4.57/2. He's only run once since, when well beaten in an Aintree bumper on debut for new yard back in April 2014. He is a course and distance winner and trainer Donald McCain and jockey Jason Maguire enjoy a 21% Strike-Rate here so he commands respect in this very ordinary race, despite switching to hurdles.
We find our last selection in the form of Oscatara, another for the same leading trainer-jockey combination as Beatu above, running in the 16:30 Handicap Chase. Backed in to second favourite from 6.411/2 in to 3.711/4 there's confidence in the market for this hurdles winner despite the seemingly poor form. Oscatara shaped as if amiss on two starts out of the last four, Yet we can't rule this mover out and neither should you.
