The markets have been reviewed and today's three Follow The Money selections come from the meeting at Aintree...
Our first back comes in the 14:30 at Aintree and is the aptly named Spirit Of Shankly. Echoes of the great man will be ringing around Aintree if the market is accurate as he's been supported from 4.47/2 in to 3.45.
The selection showed useful form early last season, winning twice and finishing runner-up at this meeting and whilst only a creditable performance on his handicap debut (better was expected) at this course in April, there are strong grounds to think he could do much better today. His trainer, Charlie Longsdon has made his traditional fast start to the season with ten winners in October at a strike rate of 24%. More significantly though Spirit Of Shankly has had a breathing operation having hit flat spots in his races at the end of last season and also has an excellent record fresh. If the breathing operation works the oracle the master of Hull Farm has a well handicapped horse on his hands ready to take advantage.
Burton Port has taken a significant walk in the market, all the way out to 4.216/5 from 3.02/1. He reappears in the Veteran's Handicap Chase at Aintree at 15:40.
He needed his first run back last season and judged on the market the same could be true today. Like most of us, he appears to take longer to get fit as he gets older and he hasn't received much help from the handicapper thanks to good run in the Bet365 Gold Cup in the Spring, the time of year when he comes to himself. He will struggle to concede weight to his rivals, notably the well handicapped Pigeon Island who is some 15lb lower in the weights than when narrowly missing out in this last year. Lay is the call.
We stay at the Merseyside track for the second back at 16:50. Philip Hobbs has hit form in the recent weeks notching seven wins and seven seconds in the last fortnight and Horizontal Speed looks a good bet to add to those gains. His price has contracted from 5.95/1 in to 4.3100/30 and this progressive Hurdler (four wins last season) was as good as any of these rivals in that discipline (officially rated 140).
However he promises to make a better chaser. He's bred and built for the job, Timeform's describing him as 'tall, useful-looking gelding: will make a chaser' and his trainer stating "He will be going novice chasing with two and a half miles being his trip. I hope he will make a lovely chaser." He won first time out last season and everything looks in place for a big run. The error prone favourite, Timesremembered, will have to respect the larger obstacle far more than he did his hurdles and makes the market for our selection.
