Follow The Money: A trio of Boxing Day bets including a King George selection

Will Paul taste big race success with Silviniaco Conti?

Today's Follow The Money bets come from the meetings at Kempton and Wetherby.

"Silviniaco Conti will need to travel and jump better than he did when finishing 2nd in his only other run at Kempton, two years ago in the Feltham, but he has improved a lot since then and become a strong travelling type."

Back Silviniaco Conti @ 5.204/1 15:10 Kempton

We start things off in the 12:50 Novice Hurdle over two miles at Kempton where there has been a positive move for Nicky Henderson's Vaniteux, supported from 4.507/2 in to 3.45. Henderson has won this race the last two years with Tetlami and River Maigue and the market seems to indicate that he could go close with the hat-trick attempt. On his debut under rules at Sandown Vaniteux made a mistake just as the race was taking shape, recovered, and then travelled well into the race after that. Just as he took the lead he made another small error but then found plenty in the finish to win with something in hand. He will have learned an awful lot from that and with the expected improvement he should go close today.

Heading over to Wetherby for the 13:45 3m1f Handicap Chase where we have today's lay bet in the shape of Sydney Paget who had drifted out from 3.052/1 to 4.30100/30. It is interesting that there has been opposition in the market for this horse as he was vying for favouritism in the ante-post market for this Saturday's Coral Welsh Grand National but connections have gone for the 'easier' option. The market doesn't feel that, and the youngest horse in the field has to cope with a fairly hefty rise in the weights of 13lbs (similar to what I put on with Christmas dinner yesterday) for his Haydock win and is up against some far more experienced contenders. One other point to note is that, historically, Sydney Paget has found less than expected in the run, with five trades at 1.75/7 or less in defeat, so could be worth a low lay in the in-running market but pre-race the market has definitely been against the six year old.

For our last mover of the day we return to Kempton for the big race, the 15:10 King George VI Chase over 3m, where we're backing Silviniaco Conti who has been backed in from 6.6011/2 into 5.204/1. Now one of the major influences behind this move has been that Pricewise in the Racing Post has tipped him up, but there is also a feeling that he will come on a great deal from the run behind Cue Card in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November. He will need to travel and jump better than he did when finishing 2nd in his only other run at Kempton, two years ago in the Feltham, but he has improved a lot since then and become a strong travelling type who should have plenty of pace to track with Cue Card, Champion Court and the first-time visored Long Run in the field. Let us hope the market support has found us the 'vincitore' of the race.
