Today's Follow The Money selections run at Fairyhouse and Cork...
We start at Fairyhouse where we have seen steady support for Jer's Girl in the 15:05, a Grade 1 Mares Novice Hurdle over 2m4f. Backed in from 5.14/1 to 4.67/2, and a good weight of money as well considering the competitive nature of the race. She gave Triumph Hurdle runner-up Apple's Jade a hell of a race first time in Graded company at Leopardstown in December, and was only beaten a head. She was then a bit disappointing on her next run on tacky ground where she finished fifth, well beaten by Willie Mullins's Footpad at the same track. However, she was also only beaten a head by Ivanovich Gorbatov that day who went on to take the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham so on the face of it this is still top class Juvenile form. Jer's Girl is likely to be fresh and will certainly relish the step up in trip, and with her age allowance we think she will take a bit of beating today.
Our each-way selection runs in the 15:40, a Grade 2 race, again over 2m4f, where there has been money for Gordon Elliot's Crest. Matched as high as 27.026/1 and currently trading at 17.5, this gelding is Gigginstown's so-called third string and therefore the money could be significant. He looked a half-decent animal on debut beating his stable mate Kashmiri Sunset by three-and-a-quarter lengths, although that form was let down when that horse was beaten at odds-on next time out, however the 5-year-old could be anything and open to plenty of improvement.
We think it's worth taking a risk and suggest backing Crest at a decent each-way price.
We stay in the Emerald Isle but switch to Cork for our negative this afternoon. Fine Rightly has been easy to back this morning in the 17:05 - a Grade 3 chase over three miles. Matched as low as 1.51/2, the gelding is currently available to back at 1.738/11. With the Pairofbrowneyes a non-runner we would have suspected Fine Rightly to be a lot stronger at the head of the market. The form with his step up to three miles is very good - a fortuitous third in the Irish Gold Cup before taking a lesser race at Down Royal next time out over a slightly longer trip, however there are some really decent rivals he has to take on today in the form of the rejuvenated Toon River and the consistent Arctic Skipper. We recommend a tentative lay on Fine Rightly with a reasonably low liability.
Back Jer's Girl @ 4.67/2 in the 15:05 at Fairyhouse
Back Crest each way @ 17.5 in the 15:40 at Fairyhouse
Lay Fine Rightly @ 1.738/11 in the 17:05 at Cork
