We start with a negative in the day's opening event (14:00) where Rivet has been easy to back all morning and has seen his price drift from 2.021/1 out to 2.588/5 - we feel it is worth taking on the William Haggas juvenile in this Group 2 event. His position at the top of the market is due to his smart win in a big field of maidens at the Ebor Meeting, however this race represents a huge leap in class and the form of the race is questionable; several of those behind that day have failed to trouble the judge and we prefer the chances of Thunder Snow - who finished second in a Group 2 at Goodwood last time out and Majeste, whose stable has won this race three times in the last five years. A lay bet is recommended.

For the each-way bet of the day we turn to the Portland Handicap (14:35) where there has been a significant punt on Captain Colby in to 7.06/1 from an early 10.37. This lightly-raced four-year old has run well in big fields such as this, most notably last month at York, where he ran on well at the end to finish third from a bad draw. Several of today's opponents were behind him that day and we see no reason why they will reverse the form this afternoon, especially as our selection has a kinder draw today. As ever this race is highly competitive where a case can be made out for many of the runners, we therefore recommend an each-way bet on Captain Colby.

Our final selection is Turning The Table in the (17:25) who has been supported from 6.05/1 in to 4.3100/30 and we feel the three-year old filly will justify that confidence with a win today. She made a good start to her career with a comfortable win in a Chepstow maiden last year but has been a tad disappointing since. However her breeding suggests that today's 12 furlong trip will be well within her compass (she ran well on her handicap debut over a mile and a quarter in May - her last outing) and as long as she is fit today after such a long layoff we expect the bottom weight to run a big race this afternoon, a win bet is the recommendation.
