Follow The Money: Oppose the Opposition at Ascot this afternoon
Today's Follow The Money comes from Ascot and Chester...
It's King George day at Ascot so inevitably our Follow The Money selections today are weighted towards Ascot's fantastic mid-summer showpiece. We must wait for the closing mile and a half handicap at 17:35 for the key negative though, namely Opposition. Ed Dunlop's gelding was backed at [2.13] when the market was taking shape, but now [3.05] is readily available. His latest reverse is easily forgiven as the company was simply too hot, but having gained his first win from a mark of 69, he now operates from a lofty perch of 84. His latest win at Newmarket was gained in a three runner affair from Juste Pour Nous, who has failed to score in five subsequent runs. Opposition was getting 4lbs when they met, and a collateral reading of the form suggests he is now harshly treated.
Our each-way selection comes in the Ascot 15:20, a Class 2 1m handicap for three year olds. Lots of decent colts and geldings take their chance, but a filly at the foot of the weights is garnering plenty of market attention. Hughie Morrison's Pirouette is on a roll having won her last two starts, and punters expecting the hat-trick have forced her price down from [9.75] to [7.4]. The form of her first victory has worked out exceptionally well, and she followed up in style just over a fortnight ago at Doncaster. This represents a stiffer assignment, but with a feather weight on her back this improving filly can make her presence felt.
Our back selection comes in the 14:50 at Chester, where an eye-catching jockey booking is translating into market confidence for Golden Glimmer. Trainer Tom Dascombe is renowned for doing well at Chester, but the fact he has recruited top southern-based jockey Martin Harley for rides at the Cheshire venue is interesting. The filly is a course winner earlier this season and ran with real credit in warmer company at Ascot recently. With conditions to suit and a draw that should prove beneficial given her attacking run style, a move from [5.0] to [4.1] looks significant.
Lay Opposition @ [3.05] in the 17:35 at Ascot
Back Pirouette each-way @ [7.4] in the 15:20 at Ascot
Back Golden Glimmer @ [4.1] in the 14:50 at Chester
