Today's Follow the Money comes from the meetings at Newmarket and Fontwell...
We start off at Newmarket for the 15:45 Conditions Stakes over seven furlongs, where Hawkesbury has been drifting this morning, from a low of 2.111/10 to 2.47/5. This Charlie Appleby-trained two-year-old colt looked very useful when bolting up on his second start at Doncaster over this trip back in June. But seeing as he reportedly finished lame last time out when holding his head awkwardly and hanging to the right the market worry gives us a strong case to take him on, especially with the exciting Fannaan in the field.
On to Fontwell's 16:45 Novice's Handicap Hurdle, where Ordensritter has attracted quite a lot of attention, backed in from 11.010/1 in to 7.87/1 second favourite. He has shown little over hurdles when tried in 2012-2013 but with only five attempts it's hard to write him off. Running fresh today, having been off for five months, is a positive as he won back to back victories at Kempton 11 months apart with the first in April 2013 and his best flat form when winning a 2m AW there in March. The market thinks he can transfer his flat form to hurdles and who are we to argue?
We return to Newmarket for the 16:55 Conditions Stakes, where Murgan has caught our eye this morning after being backed in from an opening 10.519/2 to 4.77/2. This 190,000gns brother to the very smart winner Midas Touch could be hard to fancy based on finishing fifth of nine in a Newcastle maiden on debut but the runner-up has since won well and this one made late headway and could be set for major improvement. He's definitely the best value here and with almost half the money on the market traded on him confidence is high.
