York Placepot: Friday August 23

It's Nunthorpe day on the Knavesmire.

Timeform's Matt Gardner attempts to land the Placepot on Nunthorpe day at York...

"Moviesta boasts a rapidly progressive profile, hitting the mark in a Group 2 at Glorious Goodwood, and remains open to further improvement..."

13:55 - White Nile and Gospel Choir both remain unexposed and are expected to show themselves as being ahead of their current marks at some stage this season but they do have sizeable absences to overcome so we're going to take them on with Castilo del Diablo and Winterlude. The first mentioned found only the improving Seal Of Approval too strong at Kempton last time and remains one to be interested in despite having gone up 6 lb for that effort whilst Winterlude, trained by Charlie Appleby, boasts a positive profile having won his two outings this term and it would come as a surprise were he not to prove capable of better still.

14:30 - Ahzeemah looks to be an excellent starting point in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup, as the four-year-old has finished in the frame on each occasion that he has taken to the track in his career to date and he seems certain to go well once more. Times Up hasn't shown his true colours this season but there have been excuses, likely to have been in need of the run on his reappearance and unsuited by how the race developed in the Ascot Gold Cup, and he would be a major player here if returning to the form that saw him land this race 12 months ago.

15:05 - I'm not sure that Pavlosk will stay the nine furlongs that she faces here but this doesn't look the strongest race for the grade and she could yet have more to offer, so she goes in as our first selection. Archbishop very nearly went in as the back-up as he has gone well fresh in the past but there is a slight query with regards to the trip so we shall instead side with City Style, who probably needed the run at Haydock last time and is a largely consistent performer.

15:40 - Now this was tricky, as the rain absolutely hammered down all night in York which has resulted in an ease of the going description. The Knavesmire drains pretty quickly these days and the ground is unlikely to inconvenience anything to a major extent but we're still going to swerve the likes of Shea Shea, Sole Power and Swiss Spirit, who all seem at their best on quick ground, and instead take Slade Power and Moviesta, who are proven on a range of surfaces. Slade Power took his form to a new level when winning a strong Group 3 last time, impressing with how well he travelled through the race, whilst Moviesta boasts a rapidly progressive profile, hitting the mark in a Group 2 at Glorious Goodwood, and remains open to further improvement.

16:20 - Golden Town looks the sort to improve markedly with his debut under his belt but the application of a tongue tie is slightly disconcerting and it may be best to take Red Galileo, who sets the standard based upon his debut second at Newmarket a fortnight ago, where he caught the eye in no uncertain terms. It's also worth including Derbyshire, a Kevin Ryan-trained debutant €155,000 earlier this year; he has been pretty strong in the market this morning and could go well on his racecourse bow.

16:55 - Tactics are the name of the game here, and we're going to include one that is likely to be forcing the pace and one that could capitalise were the leaders to go too quick. Majestic Moon fills the first mentioned category and his form has taken off recently, winning three on the bounce including a competitive handicap at Glorious Goodwood. His improvement has coincided with the adoption of front-running tactics and it would be folly to dismiss his chances despite having gone up a further 5 lb and there being a slight question over the extra furlong faced here. The one who could pounce as the pace collapses is Short Squeeze, who impressed with a sharp turn of foot when winning at Sandown last time and should go well again for all that the form of that race hasn't really worked out.

13:55 - 6, 13
14:30 - 1, 7
15:05 - 3, 7
15:40 - 7, 14
16:20 - 3, 6
16:55 - 10, 17
