Wolverhampton Placepot: Tuesday January 29

Tuesday's Placepot comes from Wolverhampton

Wolverhampton looks the better option for today's Placepot attempt.

"Pategonia almost certainly has the greater potential, though Stormbound’s greater experience and proven suitability for this sort of trip mark him as the one you should be taking if you’re feeling the urge to bank."

14:00 - A couple of in-form veterans should be enough to see us through this eight-runner amateur handicap which kicks off the card. Stormy Morning and Baan actually met the last time they ran, in a similar event at this track over an extended two miles, with the former coming out on top after the latter had been hampered. The fact that Stormy Morning is only 1 lb higher and Baan on the same mark today is in itself reason to put them on the shortlist, while both have already run well for their respective riders today, an important considering when looking at amateur riders' races.

14:30 - This is a weak race for the grade, with few of these fillies in mares in anything approaching good form. Climaxfortackle is the clear exception and duly a clear favourite, while her consistency of late is enough to make sure she gets in our perm. She has a tendency to get behind in her races, though, and therefore we need insurance. The best option would appear to be Little China, if for no other reason than the fact that she has more speed than most of her rivals and may get an uncontested lead, as there are no confirmed front runners in the field.

15:00 - Stand Guard mightn't be absolutely bombproof, he does throw in the odd poor run, but his overall strike-rate on the all-weather is sufficiently high that we can justify banking on him in this four-runner event.

15:30 - It's a process of elimination as much as anything else in this seller, with Chosen Forever and West End Lad, third and first respectively in a C&D similar event less than a fortnight ago, taken as the most solid options ahead of the inferior Temuco and Five Hearts, the quirky Faithful Ruler and the long-absent Asterism.

16:00 - There might be only seven runners in this maiden, leaving us with just two places to aim at, but the field can be all but narrowed down to two. The pair in question are Pategonia and Stormbound. The first-named almost certainly has the greater potential, though Stormbound's greater experience and proven suitability for this sort of trip mark him as the one you should be taking if you're feeling the urge to bank.

16:30 - A tricky final leg to negotiate, with a few of these apparently low-grade handicappers lurking on marks they could have plenty in hand of. Those types generally aren't for Placepot bettors, though, and more solid options for us are represented by the likes of Dubai Celebration, a runner-up over C&D last time who rarely runs a bad race, and Berti Blu Boy, who had been slowly but surely resurgent during this all-weather season.

14:30 - 6, 8
15:00 - 2
15:30 - 1, 3
