Wetherby Placepot: Wednesday November 26

Wetherby arguably makes for the best Placepot prospect on Wednesday, with small fields tainting Fontwell and maidens dominating on the all-weather.

"Only two of the six in this handicap (which isn’t even restricted to novices) have chase ratings, but this is a stronger race than that implies."

12:15 - There are two routes through the opening claimer: the mean way and the hard way. We're going to take the mean way: bank on Too Generous, who has better form than any of the others and has given his running more often than not. The fact that last time was an exception to that is the only significant concern.

12:50 - Leg two offers a fairly straightforward opportunity to duck a favourite. If In Doubt demands respect, of course, but an ignominious exit at the second on his chasing debut puts enough short-term doubt over him. We also have a sound backup option, Sego Success having shaped well in a much deeper race than this (won by Sausalito Sunrise) at Chepstow a month or so back.

13:20 - Another good opportunity to avoid the favourite. We have an even deeper respect for Ma du Fou in this race, it being no exaggeration to say connections must be dreaming of graded races in the long run, but as a hurdling debutant we're reluctant to plump for him. With The Grey Taylor being such a clear-cut second choice courtesy of a likeable winning debut over C&D on Charlie Hall day, he gets the nod as one nailed on to make the places regardless of how Ma du Fou fares.

13:50 - Only two of the six in this handicap (which isn't even restricted to novices) have chase ratings, but this is a stronger race than that implies. As one who's in form and could have been hit harder for his success last time, Tresor de Bontee has to go in as the solid option. A gamble is taken on Back To Bracka for our second choice, the feeling being that he has a lot more to give for this yard as soon as things are just right. With him now experienced over fences, we see no reason why that shouldn't be here.

14:25 - Our best option in this juvenile is Top of The Glas, who took well to hurdling at Bangor and has the Flat form to suggest better to come as he gains in experience. None of the others can offer the same guarantees.

15:00 - We end as we started, with an odds-on Pipe charge. There simply isn't a strong enough opposition to Smiles For Miles, such an impressive winner at Chepstow last week, to suggest anything else.
