Timeform's Matt Gardner tackles the Newcastle Placepot on Northumberland Plate day...
"Tominator is a fairly solid proposition in big-field staying handicaps and, though he races from a career-high mark, it would take a braver man than me to suggest that he cannot win..."
14:05 - Jack Dexter is likely to take plenty of stopping in the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes if anything like the same form as when fifth in the King's Stand last week, and he presents an ideal opportunity for us to immediately save a few lines.
14:40 - Numbers 9, 10 and 11 are the ones that you want to mark on your ticket here, with Fast Shot, Barracuda Boy and Johannes all likely to play their part in what is a pretty competitive sprint handicap. The first mentioned landed this race 12 months ago from just a 3 lb lower mark and has shaped well on his last couple of outings whilst Barracuda Boy, a three-year-old, has improved this term and looks to be on a workable mark. Johannes, an old boy in comparison at the age of 10, is potentially well treated and there was a glimmer of promise to glean from his latest effort at Newmarket, where he looked to be coming to the boil.
15:15 - Tominator is a fairly solid proposition in big-field staying handicaps and, though he races from a career-high mark, it would take a braver man than me to suggest that he cannot win. He appeals as being a good starting point in the Placepot with Handsome Man also worth including, who probably has the ability to go close if seeing out the trip. The four-year-old was steadily progressive last year and has improved again this season; his consistency is hard to knock and he will be suited by coming off the likely strong pace.
15:50 - Very little splits the field on Timeform weight-adjusted ratings in this seven furlong handicap so we want three on side, starting with Gatepost who hasn't won for a while but had excuses at Newmarket last time and is on an attractive mark. Able Master is pretty consistent and returned to his best last time, so is well worth sticking in, and we're also going to take a bit of a chance on Mehdi, who is potentially well-treated and it would come as no surprise were he to make an impact on just his second start for this yard.
16:20 - Fast Track shaped well on debut ta York earlier this month, going well for a long way before a potential lack of fitness took its toll, and he seems sure to improve. It would be a surprise were he to miss the places but we're going to seek some insurance with Another Royal, a half-sister to the same connections' Cocktail Charlie and Royal Rascal, who offered some promise on her Redcar debut and could leave that form well behind now.
16:50 - Ground softer than good is an unknown for Whispering Warrior but he has done nothing but improve since joining David Simcock, winning on four of his five starts, and it would be foolish to rule out further improvement. Final leg banker.
