Newbury Placepot: Friday March 21

Newbury plays host to racing on Friday.

Timeform's Matt Gardner tackles the Placepot at Newbury...

"Fix It Right ran pretty poorly last time for no obvious reason, but he’s been given a break since then and his win on his penultimate outing at Doncaster was impressive..."

14:10 - My Wigwam Or Yours is probably the one that would be expected to finish in the places in the opening leg but there is a chance that several might improve past him, particularly Call Me Vic who made a promising start over hurdles at Doncaster in January. The step up in trip promises to suit and he should be right in the mix.

14:40 - The card says that Royal Guardsman ran just six days ago but he actually got no further than the first, sending Tom Scudamore flying with a spectacular unseat. His jumping up until that contest hadn't looked a massive problem and he could get back on track here. It's also worth including Deciding Moment, who is 7 lb higher than when scoring on his second start over fences at Wincanton in October but is just the type to go on improving.

15:10 - Fix It Right ran pretty poorly last time for no obvious reason, but he's been given a break since then and his win on his penultimate outing at Doncaster was impressive, scoring with a bit in hand. He remains unexposed and is worth another chance, so is included alongside Thomas Junior, who was probably an unlucky loser on handicap debut at Huntingdon last time and should do better still.

15:45 - Just the two places to aim at but we should be in safe hands with Ifyousayso, who is improving all the time as a chaser and posted his bets effort yet when scoring at Doncaster in January. An absence since isn't of any concern as he hasn't stood all that much racing through his career and, though he's 10 lb higher now, there is every chance that there is more to come.

16:20 - Volnay de Thaix is the "obvious" one in here having finished second to Irving in a Grade 2 last time but there's a chance that he might lack for speed over two miles on decent ground, so he's worth opposing with Dormello Mo and Ted Spread. The first mentioned improved at the second time of asking for this yard when scoring readily at Sandown a fortnight ago on handicap debut and is likely to progress further still, whilst Ted Spread is not yet fully exposed over hurdles and could have more to offer bearing in mind his level of ability on the Flat.

16:55 - Paint The Clouds and Prince Tom are the two best horses in the hunter chase and, given the sometimes unpredictable nature of these contests, it's best to include them both.
