Though it's not a perfect opportunity to scoop the Placepot pool, Market Rasen's card makes more appeal than Kempton...
"Frankly, there’s nothing in this field that should trouble Midnight Request if that one’s in the same sort of form as when second on his last two starts."
13:50 - We can't rely on any of the runners left in this novice hurdle. Maison de Ville is as close as we're likely to get, the trip likely to be within her reach and the switch from David O'Meara to Brian Ellison no real negative. Both Jonjo O'Neill horses have greater potential, and of them Deadly Sting is the more sensible selection: his bumper form is better and he's more stoutly bred, mindful of this much longer trip on his hurdling debut.
14:20 - Run Ructions Run hasn't been given an obviously lenient BHA mark starting out in handicaps, so her position as favourite isn't unimpeachable. Nonetheless she was consistent in novices, actually putting up her best effort last time. Even with there now being just seven in this field, she can go in alone.
14:50 - There's not a reliable one amongst them here. Once again, the favourite is perhaps shorter than is justifiable yet he makes the most sense. New Year's Eve is favourably treated and has been consistent this season barring when he tackled a competitive handicap at Musselburgh. We're pinning our hopes on him coping better in this race, which isn't as strongly contested.
15:20 - The rules dictate that Certification should be the selection here, with him having a reasonable amount of experience as well as form in the book. However, he's just a four-year-old and may find this test a bit much at this stage of his career. Instead, hurdling debutant Kilcooley is preferred. He's unraced over hurdles and hasn't been seen since November, yet he's stoutly bred with good bumper form and morning support suggests he'll be ready for this.
15:55 - Join The Clan is a threatening presence in this handicap hurdle, but there's a better option for the Placepot. Theatrebar has slowly been getting better over hurdles, most recently finishing second on his handicap debut at Huntingdon. He stayed on strongly that day so as to suggest he'll get three miles now and, despite a 6 lb rise, should be up to emerging best of the rest even if Join The Clan proves too strong.
16:30 - The final leg is easy, if not exactly likely to be a money-spinner. Frankly, there's nothing in this field that should trouble Midnight Request if that one's in the same sort of form as when second on his last two starts. Everything else has a question or several to answer and would only waste lines.
