Lingfield Placepot: Sunday December 21

Venetia Williams trains Lingfield fancy John Louis

There's racing from Lingfield this afternoon and that is where we head for Sunday's attempt at the Placepot...

12:40- Allthegear No Idea confirmed the promise of his debut second when digging deep to win over C&D last month, and another bold bid looks assured, provided he has recovered from those exertions. Allthegear No Idea proved his ability to handle testing conditions when winning here last time, and that is a massive positive, so we will bank on Nigel Twiston-Davies' charge in the opener.

13:10- The thriving Finish The Story goes in search of the four-timer and ought to go close. Finish the Story has been much improved for Johnny Farrelly since fitted with blinkers, switching between hurdling and chasing to great effect, and he should be suited by today's testing conditions which will place the emphasis firmly on stamina.

13:40- John Louis is a well handicapped horse over hurdles and shaped well at both Cheltenham and Leicester, travelling like a horse with more to offer. Extremely testing conditions offer something of a concern, but John Louis could just prove a class above, and he should be difficult to beat.

14:10- Umberto D'olivate racked up four wins last season and he shaped with some promise at Exeter last time, showing significant improvement from his comeback outing. He ran something like his best to finish a close-up fifth at Exeter and, with testing conditions in his favour, he ought to be on the premises. We will also include Simply Wings in the permutation. Simply Wings represents the in-form Richard lee stable and he has slipped to an attractive mark following a lacklustre end to last season. It could be worth chancing that a return to optimum conditions allied with his yard's form will bring about a revival.

14:40- Sportsreport has looked an improved performer of late but he is prone to mistakes, so it could be worth taking him on with Veyranno. Veyranno was well held on all three starts over hurdles, but he fared better on his chasing debut at Ffos Las, showing some promise to finish third. He went backwards from that when coming home last of four at Market Rasen, but all may not have been well, and it's still early days in his chasing career. This is a good opportunity for him to bounce back.

15:10- It could be worth taking a chance on Feb Thirtyfirst as he was a fair juvenile hurdler - who is proven on heavy ground - and may have just needed both of his runs back from an extended absence. He is fitted with blinkers, has been offered some respite by the handicapper, and could just prove a different proposition now. He's clearly no banker, though, so Grace And Fortune also goes into the mix following a second over C&D last time. In truth, she never looked a threat and was flattered by her proximity to the winner, but the fact she is proven under these conditions is a positive and we will keep her onside.
