It's a Goldilocks day on the Placepots: Sedgefield too easy, Salisbury too hard. Hopefully Haydock will prove just right, even with three maidens.
"American Artist has been all the rage in the betting and it’s not all that surprising given the opposition. Still, we can’t really be going in on short-priced debutants and thankfully the experienced Subversive gives us a sound alternative."
14:00 - Placepot mores pull us in different directions in leg one. Dissolution has the experience and solid profile, but is favourite ahead of Arabian Oasis and that looks increasingly likely to remain the case. Dissolution gets the narrow verdict, his extra experience worth just a little more than 'unnamed favourite' money.
14:30 - We should focus on the three-year-olds here, though through process of elimination rather than them putting themselves forward. Starlight Serenade is difficult to ignore having never missed the frame, notwithstanding the fact that she hasn't always been as unwaveringly reliable as that makes out. Hostile Fire has been improving more obviously and is still doing so for all he met with defeat for the first time in four starts when we last saw him. It's a surprise he isn't shorter.
15:00 - American Artist has been all the rage in the betting and it's not all that surprising given the opposition. Still, we can't really be going in on short-priced debutants and thankfully the experienced Subversive gives us a sound alternative. He's more speedily bred than most Mark Johnston charges and will have no problem sticking to six furlongs for now.
15:35 - The waters are clearer in division two of the maiden. There is no real alternative to Skate, who can count himself a little unlucky not to be a winner already and comes up against what's projected to be a much weaker field here.
16:05 - This minor event is tricky, though in selecting any two from the four that appear to matter we should be okay. Morache Music is a strong first selection, consistent and with an especially admirable effort to his name from last time- not all that many handicaps are won from a BHA mark of 104. A poor run from Baltic Knight last time just pushes Dutch Rose ahead of him for second place.
16:40 - I'm moonlighting as a Timeform Radio pundit today, so readers of that column will know my thoughts on the closer already. Xinbama, a strong win selection, is also consistent enough to warrant a place in our perm, his luckless sixth at York last time the first time this year he's been out of the first two. Lady Tyne is a more unusual Placepot selection, though she gets into handicaps from a mark that's lower than the expectations her top yard have placed on her.
