We head to the Sussex Downs on Wednesday for a low-stakes perm to try and scoop the Placepot...
" If Rainbow Rock can reproduce anything like the level of his performance Glorious Goodwood here earlier in the summer he’ll have a live chance..."
14:05 - We kick off proceedings with a seven-furlong maiden and the first to keep on side is American Artist, who was unable to justify short-priced favouritism on debut at Haydock but still made an encouraging start to his career. He appeals as the most likely winner with that experience under his belt, and another who looks sure to run well is Quick Defence. He showed signs of promise on debut at Leicester and providing he progresses from that should be on the premises.
14:40 - It's another maiden, this time over nine furlongs, and it's going to be quite a test of stamina for the juveniles who line up. As a result a sole selection will suffice in the shape of Dissolution, who wasn't stopping when runner-up over a mile at Haydock last time and looks the type who will respond positively to the visor he wears for the first time today.
15:15 - A small but select field lines up for the three-year-old handicap over 11 furlongs which follows, and as a result another sole selection will be sufficient. Spacelab has the potential to be a useful prospect after overcoming significant signs of greenness to land a competitive maiden at Lingfield last month and although she has to shoulder top-weight here, a big step up on her handicap debut would be no surprise for local trainer Amanda Perrett.
15:50 - A decent feature contest for a mid-week card comes next in a listed race over ten furlongs and given that Grandeur is the class act in the field, he can't be ignored. He's acquitted himself admirably both home and abroad since winning this race last year, and was especially unlucky not to win at Belmont last time. If he responds positively to the cheekpieces fitted today he should prove a cut above his rivals.
16:25 - It's a competitive 12-furlong handicap which follows and Rainbow Rock is taken to put an awkward display at Ascot last time behind him. It was probably the quick ground which was the main cause and back on an easier surface with headgear refitted, if he can reproduce anything like the level of his performance Glorious Goodwood here earlier in the summer he'll have a live chance.
16:55 - It's another tight-knit handicap in the final leg of today's perm, this time over seven furlongs and we will keep a trio on side to ensure that if we're still in the game at this stage we stand a decent chance of landing the pot. Ganymede has improved significantly since being fitted with blinkers recently and has to be kept on side for his hat-trick bid. Good Luck Charm has been in better form than recent figures suggest and both of his wins came over this trip, and he has the services of Ryan Moore to help him too. Finally, Belle Bayardo is turning into a decent performer for his current yard, scoring again at Chepstow earlier this month. This is a higher grade but he's another in too rich a vein of form to ignore.
