After a profitable perm to kick off the meeting yesterday, we return to the Sussex Downs to try and make it two in a row...
"The other to make the cut is Highland Reel, who looked a colt of some potential when hacking up in a Gowran Park maiden last time and can continue his rapid progression through the juvenile ranks..."
13:55 - The first contest under consideration is a staying handicap over 21 furlongs and given how much Maid In Rio improved when hacking up at Ascot on Friday, she's impossible to ignore under just a 3 lb penalty. The other to keep on side is Ray Ward, who was unlucky not to finish closer in the Ascot Stakes and can make his presence felt providing he gets a clearer passage this time.
14:30 - A sole selection will suffice in the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes which follows and Sir Michael Stoute's peerless record in the contest (7 wins) means that Snow Sky is the one to carry our hopes. He won the Lingfield Derby Trial in taking fashion in May and shaped better than the result suggested at Royal Ascot last time, and should make the frame at the very least.
15:05 - We rely on another sole selection in the feature contest of the day, the Group 1 Qipco Sussex Stakes and if Kingman can produce the devastating turn of foot he showed at Ascot last time, this will be a one horse race and he's a confident selection to keep the perm alive.
15:40 - The Hannon team have won the last four renewals of the Group 2 Vintage Stakes which follows and as a result Tupi should be kept on side as the choice of stable jockey Richard Hughes. The other to make the cut is Highland Reel, who looked a colt of some potential when hacking up in a Gowran Park maiden last time and can continue his rapid progression through the juvenile ranks with another win here.
16:15 - It's a six-furlong fillies' maiden up next and the first to get the nod is Shahah, whose second at Doncaster last month sets a fairly clear standard on known form and looks the most likely winner with significant improvement on the cards. The other who looks likely to run well is Hundi who ran very green when well-backed on debut at Newmarket and could be a danger if she's got the hang of things this afternoon.
16:50 - The final leg of today's perm is a fillies' handicap over nine furlongs and the task looks to have got easier for all concerned now Water Hole is a non-runner. Hiking has only been rasied 2 lb for her Salisbury victory, and the attitude she (eventually) showed there should stand her in good stead this afternoon. The other selection is Patterned who has some strong form in the book despite having just the two starts to her name and looks sure to improve for the step up in trip this afternoon.
