Glorious Goodwood Placepot: Tuesday July 29

Glorious Goodwood begins on Tuesday

Placepot riches await those who can successfully negotiate a typically challenging first day at Glorious Goodwood...

"We can’t escape Havana Cooler in the Summer Stakes, his profile being one of consistent, steady improvement with some latent ability left aside for longer trips like this one thrown into the bargain."

13:55 - We start with Amjan Bridge in leg one. He's been more quietly progressive than some of the others and therefore looks likely to draw less of the pool. He's got better by the run this year, resuming his overall progress when just touched off at Newbury last time by one who got the run of things.

A sensible backup would be Stomachion, whose profile is more obviously on a steep gradient. Just as importantly, he's proved himself around both this course and Epsom already, so he can have few complaints by way of this track's undulations.

14:30 - There are short-priced favourites from the Hannon yard in both the Molecomb and the Lennox that follows. With a more clear-cut pecking order behind Beacon in this race, it's him we'll oppose. Cotai Glory is the selection against Beacon and he actually boasts better form after four starts, albeit without suggesting he still has as much improvement in him as that one. Either way, he's a clear second-best at least and should make the first two.

15:05 - As we've just alluded to, this leg is a more sensible time for a craven banker on the favourite. Toormore has been exposed as not belonging at the very highest level these days, though a stiff mile stretching him has played its part in that and this drop to seven, combined with the relatively easier task, ought to help him back towards his best. He'll win if he gets anywhere close.

15:40 - We can't escape Havana Cooler in the Summer Stakes, his profile being one of consistent, steady improvement with some latent ability left aside for longer trips like this one thrown into the bargain. Noble Silk represents a sound option at slightly longer odds, consistent this year and proven over this C&D.

16:15 - Though it's conceded that newcomers like Acaster Malbis probably needn't be world-beaters to win this maiden, Dark Profit is a natural starting point for the Placepot. He has the experience, form and underlying promise to suggest he'll make the three come what may from the debutants. The same guarantees don't apply to Winstanley, who looks to be approaching his level already, though he has run only good races up to now and would have a sporting chance of making the first three if he produces another one today.

16:50 - The sharp-eyed will have spotted that we've been quite sparing with lines up to now. This leg is why; 19 runners and no easy way out.

Buckstay is where we'll start. He has form at the course (did well from out of the weights at this meeting last year) and is on the up now after an unlucky second followed by a win at Kempton last time, since when he's presumably been kept for this. Lesha also gets in as one on a lengthy run of good efforts in good-quality handicaps. Finally we take Showpiece, whose profile is in a similar vein to Lesha.

Selections:
13:55 - 13, 14
14:30 - 3
15:05 - 10
15:40 - 5, 11
16:15 - 4, 15
