Fontwell Placepot: Wednesday November 27

A raft of short-priced favourites at Wetherby makes Fontwell the logical Placepot choice on Wednesday...

"Trainer changes aren’t normally the stuff Placepot dreams are made of, but such is the frequency with which Lawney Hill draws improvement from those she inherits that Frosty Lad can be expected to show up well."

12:40 - Three of these handicap chasers appear to have especially strong claims, so the selection of two ought to see us through. Frosty Lad stands out. Trainer changes aren't normally the stuff Placepot dreams are made of, but such is the frequency with which Lawney Hill draws improvement from those she inherits that Frosty Lad can be expected to show up well. Join The Navy becomes our second selection, his form generally solid, his well-being all but secured (upsides when falling three out last time) and he has the assistance of a sound claimer in Kieron Edgar.

13:10 - Junction Fourteen appears to be winning the battle for favouritism with Gate Please, but it's the latter that looked the more solid option for our purposes anyway. He gained ample experience in bumpers over in Ireland and has run solidly on a couple of starts over hurdles for this yard. He presumably has the option of handicaps, so that he's been kept to novices (and again has AP McCoy on board) would appear to say something about connections' intentions today.

13:40 - Taking Red Rock is hardly going to mushroom our potential winnings, but it looks by far the cheapest option when faced with alternatives. Red Rock is yet another to benefit from Emma Lavelle's renaissance this winter, albeit at a lesser level than the likes of Highland Lodge and Gullinbursti, building up to a C&D win last time. That sort of experience is extremely valuable in the context of this race, making Red Rock banker material.

14:10 - Seebright has a fine winning record up to now, but with an absence to overcome as well as his position at the head of the betting it may be wise to swerve him in favour of Gores Island. That one sprang something of a surprise when winning at Sandown earlier in the month, but that race is habitually a good one of its type and seems no different this year. Up only 5 lb and in a generally weaker race today, Gores Island should be well up to going close.

14:40 - Our choice for the remainder is either to bank in the last leg, or neglect to include one of the four currently in leg five. The former play is usually the easier to pull off, so we're going to take all four here, even if Poppy Gregg is included through gritted teeth.

15:10 - All other things being equal, we'd probably include both Killegney and Absolute Shambles in this seven-runner leg. As it is, we're forced to either choose one or see our hitherto mean perm turn into a slightly bloated one. Killegney is therefore taken as a lone arrow, with the usual caveat of a place lay should caution get the better of us.

Selections:
12:40 - 1, 2
13:10 - 3
13:40 - 1
14:10 - 5
14:40 - 1, 2, 3, 4
15:10 - 4
