Exeter Placepot: Sunday February 9

Venetia Williams has some strong chances at Exeter
Venetia Williams has some strong chances at Exeter

Exeter has beaten the elements and stages an all-hurdles card which makes appeal from a Placepot perspective...

Toubeera has to concede a stone to her rivals which is sure to make things tricky, but the fact she arrives in excellent form and is proven on heavy ground makes her a good Placepot candidate and she should make the frame...

13:25- A spate of non runners has made this less competitive than it once seemed and this now looks a good opportunity for the Paul Nicholls-trained Dormello Mo on his British bow. A reproduction of the level of form he showed in France would make him extremely difficult to beat, and with the obvious chance of improvement for his top handler, he represents banker material.

13:55- Dungeness rallied well to win over two miles at Warwick last time and should be suited by this step up in trip. An 8 lb rise for that Warwick win looks fair and, with greater emphasis on stamina, the Venetia Williams-trained six-year-old looks capable of scoring again. With some tricky handicaps to tackle later on the card, we will bank on Dungeness.

14:25- Conditions are sure to be extremely testing at Exeter this afternoon but one horse that will relish the heavy ground is Chocala. Alan King's juvenile showed a confirmed liking for near-bottomless conditions on the Flat and he seems to have taken well enough to hurdling based on his debut third to subsequent winner Calipto at Newbury. Chocala has plenty in his favour today and ought to go close. We will also include Tiqris as he ran well behind some useful prospects at Newbury and won with a degree of authority at Wetherby.

14:55- All eyes will be on Fingal Bay who makes his return from an absence of over a year from a fair-looking mark, but this is a competitive contest and it could be worth taking on the market leader with some unexposed types in Berkeley Barron, Carole's Destrier and Top Gamble. Berkeley Barron needs to take a big step forward but he shapes as if this sort of stamina test will play to his strengths and he could display marked improvement. Carole's Destrier gained a well-deserved success at Huntingdon last time, having no problems with the heavy ground, and he looks fairly treated on his handicap debut. Top Gamble bombed out at Cheltenham on his return but he has been given a break and it is worth remembering the fantastic impression he created as a novice on bad ground last year. He can confirm the promise of last season.

15:25- Toubeera has to concede a stone to her rivals which is sure to make things tricky, but the fact she arrives in excellent form and is proven on heavy ground makes her a good Placepot candidate and she should make the frame. Sky Watch has been knocking on the door a few times this season and ought to give another good account, so he also makes the permutation.

16:00- This doesn't look like a strong contest and Rocky Bender should be given another chance despite disappointing over timber last time. Rocky Bender has bits and pieces of form on heavy ground that would make him a leading player here and it is hoped that the application of blinkers will have a positive impact. He is no banker proposition, though, and it could also be worth including Thedeboftheyear as she has slipped to a fair mark and has attracted early market support.
