Perth and Epsom both provide tasty field sizes for the most part, though a three-runner affair to finish at Perth sends us to Surrey.
"What About Carlo was fourth in the Lincoln last time and, though that race was run to suit him, 10 furlongs will probably be better for him in any case."
14:10 - Taking one that's reappearing for year and for a new yard mightn't be advisable in normal circumstances, but there's plenty of reason to have faith in Secret Missile. For a start, switching to Gary Moore is often a positive, while having George Baker up is another good sign. He should also be suited by Epsom's slick five-furlong track, being a singularly speedy sort. Monumental Man is a sound backup, having finished 2014 in the form of his life and returning with a solid effort at Wolverhampton recently.
14:45 - Lungarno Palace ended 2014 with some unfinished business and has returned in sound form, catching the eye at Doncaster last time. There's a chance of him getting behind again over this famous C&D, but with first three all we need that's a risk worth taking.
15:20 - A Derby Trial in which you can back any of the runners at 33/1 or more for the real thing. In fairness, Christophermarlowe and Future Empire both have the potential to be regarded as contenders back here in little over a month's time. The first named, with his win here last autumn, goes in our Placepot.
15:55 - Another tight race, though for us it's once again the narrow favourite that stands out. What About Carlo was fourth in the Lincoln last time and, though that race was run to suit him, 10 furlongs will probably be better for him in any case. Indeed, his best effort came over this C&D, when he won a historically strong handicap on Derby day from just 4 lb lower.
16:30 - With the field behind difficult to parse, Mezajy, who has hit the frame on all three starts so far, is the only cheap way through this maiden.
17:05 - Lear's Rock is a good alternative to American Artist, having race fitness on his side and having run well recently at Lingfield, where the topography is faintly similar to Epsom. Who Dares Wins also gets in, having a run behind him in which he shaped as though handicaps will bring out more from him.
