Carlisle Placepot: Thursday October 23

Better racing and less-fiddly field sizes make Carlisle the most appealing Placepot option.

"Banking on ‘squiggle’ horses is a rarity, though there is mitigation here."

14:20 - In truth Master Dee wouldn't be the ideal banker prospect in most circumstances- he was inexperienced last season and is returning from a break now. This opening maiden is so weak, however, that we have little option.

14:50 - This isn't the strongest race of its type, so Montoya's Son is difficult to leave out. Indeed we're putting him in there, though chiefly as a fall-back option for Purcell's Bridge who's in form and fit. He's also a C&D winner and an assured jumper.

15:25 - There's no easy way through this leg, just about every runner either without a recent run or struggling for form. Back To Bracka is about as close to an exception as there is, fitness a plausible excuse for his flop here a couple of weeks back. Tikkandemickey is the most reliable runner in the field on the evidence of last season and he has conditions in his favour returning if he's fit.

16:00 - Banking on 'squiggle' horses is a rarity, though there is mitigation here. Shouldavboughtgold is warned against for win bettors chiefly, as he tends to idle if presented too soon. James Reveley is pretty daring with late challenges so could be a good fit and even if he's unable to get it just right a position in the first three, which should be achievable on Shouldavboughtgold's consistent 2013/4 form, would be good enough.

16:30 - It's difficult to know for certain how much Mubrook's win at Uttoxeter last week was worth, though it's fair to say that he's well enough treated under a penalty to get involved in the finish again. The fact he was rated even higher than this in the past is another plus point and he used to be quite consistent, too.

17:00 - A good-quality maiden chase which is difficult to weigh up. The easiest option is to have faith in Urban Hymn's speed- he was a strong traveller over longer trips as a hurdler and won a bumper less than 12 months ago. He's certainly the best long-term prospect over fences in this field.
