Brighton Placepot: Tuesday June 24

Fewer maidens and more manageable field sizes make Brighton the more attractive of Tuesday's afternoon cards.

"Secret Millionaire matches the profile of what we’d want almost perfectly- in form, largely consistent... recent course form- so gets in as a banker."

13:30 - Though you might stop short of calling Brighton a specialists' track, previous form at the course is an especially marked advantage when dealing with the Placepot. Avonmore Star satisfies that criterion most clearly, a C&D winner last week, though at around even-money he's a needlessly cowardly selection. Better to take the pair of Belle Bayardo and Haadeeth, both of which have done it around here before. Belle Bayardo in particular strikes as a strong alternative to the favourite, a winner over seven furlongs here a couple of starts back and just as well suited to six.

14:00 - This maiden is uninteresting in the extreme, it being entirely feasible that a performance in the 50's could win it. We're going to take Stan Moore's two, Itsindebag and Jimmy's Hall. The first is an unadventurous choice, possessing the best form and no little experience, though we're aware that Jimmy's Hall wouldn't need to be much to beat him and Moore appears to be alive to the fact having booked Oisin Murphy for the ride.

14:30 - Secret Millionaire matches the profile of what we'd want almost perfectly- in form, largely consistent (especially strong currency in a sprint handicap such as this), recent course form- so gets in as a banker. The fact he's favourite is one we're willing to put up with in this instance.

15:00 - This handicap looks to boil down to Hamble and Men Don't Cry. It's a difficult balance to strike between the pair, given that Hamble is bound to go off favourite. His profile is seen as more solid, to the point that it's worth going through with a larger proportion of the rest. A win at Lingfield last time suggests that, for all he isn't proven here, Hamble can handle undulating tracks.

15:30 - Looking between legs five and six, the latter looks more open to a little guile. That means a banker in leg five on the standout, Auden. He was a C&D winner last time and had put up a couple of good efforts in defeat before that. Though up 7 lb, Auden has proved competitive from this sort of mark in the past and is top on weight-adjusted Timeform ratings, so we've no reason to think a hike in the weights need stop him.

16:00 - The last race in the Placepot lacks depth, which means we can avoid short-priced favourite Elle Rebelle yet still bank. Our weapon of choice is Fairy Mist, who isn't a course specialist but is on the verge of being termed a Brighton regular: he's made eight visits in the last 12 months or so, finishing second three times and making the frame on a couple of occasions besides. He comes here off a respectable effort over C&D, when he was fourth to Elle Rebelle having raced against the pace bias, much like the winner.
