Bath Placepot: Wednesday September 3

It looks a day for a small-stakes approach in the hope, rather than expectation, of success. Bath fits the bill best.

"Dutch Rifle gets in first, unpenalised for a belated first win in handicaps which was also the first time this season things had fallen her way."

14:20 - Clear Focus brings easily the strongest recent form to this race and therefore has to go in first. With the dearth of suitable alternatives he becomes a banker, today's overarching philosophy being one of not throwing unnecessary lines at this card.

14:50 - This is an ordinary maiden, so for all selecting favourite Galago would make for a more comfortable choice it's still the case that Little has the breeding and showed the promise first time up that means she should be up to making the first three.

15:20 - Sleep Walk's position in the betting is fully justified, especially as he faces a greater speed test here than last time and should therefore settle better, so he gets in as our selection in leg three.

15:50 - This handicap looks one of the strongest on this card and with seven runners is too difficult to bank in. Dutch Rifle gets in first, unpenalised for a belated first win in handicaps which was also the first time this season things had fallen her way. She's very likely to stay this far, too. The consistent Bright Cecily is a solid backup option. Some may improve past her, though she's the one you'd bank on giving her running.

16:25 - This is a straight choice between Sweeping Rock and Rowlestone Lass in a diminished staying handicap. Rowlestone Lass is the narrow preference, for two small reasons: firstly, her consistent run of form is longer than Sweeping Rock and, secondly, that Sweeping Rock is deemed the likelier to go off favourite with him having a stronger win record.

16:55 - We're combining the obvious form chance with the consistent profile again in leg six. Royal Mizar comes from category one, having finished second over C&D last time from a reduced mark. Squirrel Wood is also down to a winning mark and has been consistently climbing back to form so far this year. Stamina is the only concern for her.

Selections:
14:20 - 4
14:50 - 7
15:20 - 5
15:50 - 2, 4
16:25 - 6
16:55 - 2, 9
