Ascot Placepot: Wednesday April 30

Ascot is likely to boast the biggest pool on Wednesday and therefore is the selected Placepot meeting.

"The talent of Tac de Boistron and Simenon may match that of Harris Tweed, though circumstances should favour last year’s Long Distance Cup runner-up."

14:00 - A four-runner minor event to kick off is hardly ideal, though we can probably take out Abscent Friends and Kibaar would warrant inclusion on promise alone, so Escalating and Magical Roundabout give us a very good chance of progressing.

14:35 - Though Danehill Revival is respected after her extraordinary debut, there are plenty of other experienced and very useful sorts in this listed race. Musical Comedy is chief among them, his form last autumn moving rapidly towards smart. Race fitness would be the only doubt over Musical Comedy and second selection Speedfiend covers it, his easy win in a two-runner race little more than an exercise gallop but proving his wellbeing even so.

15:10 - We're in need of a banker in this eight-runner race and Evita Peron makes more appeal than most despite her inexperience. The fact her winning debut came just a few weeks ago is a major positive as it proves her race fitness, but moreover it is already working out favourably and she was easily best on the day.

15:45 - The Sagaro Stakes is a well-contested seven-runner race and therefore not the ideal spot for a banker, though the prospect of an easy lead for Timeform top-rated Harris Tweed makes a bold showing from him more likely. The talent of Tac de Boistron and Simenon may match that of Harris Tweed, though circumstances should favour last year's Long Distance Cup runner-up.

16:15 - Time for a risk. The market for this listed race is dominated by horses that have been running in black-type events, but it's actually Ocean Tempest, an interloper from handicaps, that tops Timeform's weight-adjusted ratings. He won the Lincoln, of course, before putting up a tremendous effort to finish fourth in what looks an especially strong renewal of the Spring Cup from a BHA mark of 107. In this sort of form, Ocean Tempest will be difficult to keep out of the three.

16:45 - The good news is that favourite Russian Realm doesn't deserve to be such a short price for such a hot race and can be left out; the bad news is that it's such a hot race. Sword of The Lord gets in first, having shaped best when splitting subsequent winners at Leicester on his reappearance. There's a lot to be said for recent form when it comes to approaching an early-season Placepot, which is reasoning behind the inclusion of Myboyalfie, a winner at Warwick last week who has proved competitive from this sort of mark in the past.

14:35 - 3, 5
15:10 - 4
15:45 - 2
16:15 - 9
16:45 - 1, 11
