Two courses, two runners, two winners?
It was very sad to learn of the death of the greatest racehorse trainer off all-time yesterday. When you read what Vincent O'Brien achieved it is simply staggering. The word legend is overused but it undeniably applies to Dr O'Brien whose record is unlikely to ever be equalled. He won the Derby six times and will be remembered at Epsom on Saturday where it is likely a horse from the yard he created, Ballydoyle, will win the Derby.
It was pleasing to see all of yesterday's selections winning but a combination of non-runners and sustained support made them very short prices. The firm ground may play its part again today but at least the sunshine is some compensation with another hot day ahead.
When the market opened last night Monaadema (7.50) at Folkstone was offered at [2.4] to back. I thought that was a bit of value and clearly I was not alone as she is now trading at [1.75]. William Haggas' filly looks very well handicapped from an official mark of 78 and has been well supported in early trading. Although she has not run for 348 days, following an impressive maiden victory, she will represent a stable in very good form. In the last 14 days the yard has sent out 17 runners and with seven winners has a strike rate of 41%. It would be no surprise to see Monaadema, the subject of good reports from Newmarket, enhance those statistics this evening.
At a more sporting price Excusez Moi (3.30) is one of six course and distance winners in this field of nine at Ripon. Ruth Carr is proving herself a very capable young trainer, having taken over from her grandfather David Chapman at the North Yorkshire yard that has done well with sprinters over the years. Excusez Moi is in good form with three wins from his last five starts and is back in handicap company after a last gasp win of a conditions event last time at Beverley. Running off 95 today the seven year-old is has won from marks of 96 and 99 when with Clive Brittain. I expect Excusez Moi to confirm his wellbeing with a win in Ripon's feature race this afternoon.
Tuesday's Bets...
3.30 Ripon - Excusez Moi - Win @ [4.1]
7.50 Folkstone - Monaadema - Win @ [1.74]
