Johnson can win again in the North East
Back Johnson's Blue @ 11/4 in the 17:33 at Hexham
A one-two for the column yesterday and a close one for the 26/1 double as Haarar proved to be one of the best backed horses on the day. It seems I wasn't the only one who had clocked he ran a faster closing furlong than French Guineas winner Modern Games on debut. Murbih finished second, again, and surely he has to win a 0-70. Don't give up on him just yet.
It's off to my beloved Hexham on Tuesday and the opening 3m handicap hurdle initially pushed me in the direction of To The Limit at 13/2, but his mark returning to hurdles isn't particularly attractive. And while Atomic Angel was close to making the list too, Johnson's Blue beat her at the track last time and should be able to confirm superiority.
The 5yo won over Hexham's 2m4f in March and recorded a good time in comparison to other contests on the card, and he looked progressive as a lightly-raced hurdler. The performance on the clock was backed up subsequently with a second and a win.
Indeed, last time out he was upped to 3m over CD and was given a strong ride by young Tom Midgley - who retains the mount.
That was his first attempt at the trip and I would be disappointed for a horse at his age if there isn't a bit more to come considering the grade. Up to a mark of 99, he can still hit the frame.
Cliche is on the up in the low grade
Back Well Cliche @ Evens in the 19:03 at Hexham
It's not often that trainer Martin Todhunter will have chances for a double, but he has a couple of favourites on the Tuesday card including Well Cliche - who should be odds-on in my opinion.
The 7yo mare won pretty easily over over Sedgefield's 3m3f last time with a smooth travelling performance off a mark of just 77.
Previously she had tried the same distance in the north east and appeared not to stay, but I put that down to the testing going. The way she travels, the better ground could suit her.
In opposition Cudgel has got staying form over 3m here, but he is an infrequent winner and might need softer conditions.
This is a weak race and Well Cliche has had only a handful of starts over fences, and she can cap off a good day for Todhunter - who has fired in two winners from his last five runners.
Even though she is short in the betting, adding her to the multiple means we are getting 6/1 on the pair.
