Can Bay Breeze in at a price?
Back Bay Breeze @ 8/1 in the 13:40 at Ripon
Yesterday's column provided another single winner in the shape of Tranquil Night at 7/2, who ran out a spectacularly easy winner of his handicap, but we really should have been counting the 24/1 double as Garrus somehow failed to get his nose up on the line.
I thought the grey was home and hosed, and had already started cheering him as he got in front. Small margins again. Very small.
Thursday's first meeting of the season at Ripon could be a chance for Tim Easterby to improve on some pretty poor stats for the season. He did have a winner yesterday Beverley, but it's only 2-72 this year at a paltry 3%. So we aren't being led by the numbers.
His Bay Breeze looks an each-way bet as he'll have his soft ground, and he looks too big at 8/1 with the three places. He won a Beverley maiden last September following a number of consistent efforts without scoring, and didn't run badly in a 0-95 Nursery Handicap on his next run. He met some trouble in that, but it was a sound effort once again in testing ground from a mark of 71. I wouldn't say he is progressive, but he was a tough juvenile that took his racing well.
Easterby knows this horse's family ever so well having trained his mother Midnight Mojito and her half-sister Midnight Martini - who was a 90-odd rated performer and acted on soft ground. This looks open and he usually stays on well enough in his races.
Wade can be a machine in the mud
Back Wade's Magic @ 17/2 in the 14:15 at Ripon
We're sticking with Easterby again for the 14:15, and to say he's having a good go at this would be something of an understatement. Three are running from his yard, and perennial old favourite Golden Apollo is down to a good mark these days, but he is eight years of age and rising.
I would rather play another each-way bet on course and distance winner Wade's Magic - another with soft and heavy going form. He won three times last season and was a model of consistency and finished second as part of a 1-2-3 for Easterby in the Sprint Final at Nottingham last term behind Ava Go Joe - who scored on the Westwood yesterday.
He's similar to the first selection and has the same draw in three out wide, but the price compensates for that.
