Alan Dudman has two selections on day two of Doncaster's St Leger meeting with the double boosted to 28/1 on the Betfair Sportsbook...
"He beat his more fancied stablemate Noble Dynasty on his Newmarket debut, who has won a handicap this term off 91. He was pitched into the Chesham but didn't see out the trip in soft conditions and a stiff finish."
Tribal looks overpriced in Park Hill
Free Wind announced herself onto the stage earlier in the season with a big win by nine lengths at Goodwood in June, and like so many fillies in the space of a couple of months, she progressed rapidly to win at Doncaster and Deauville, the latter a Group 3 and heads the betting for this at 5/2, but she looked as if she was outstayed at Newmarket in the Aphrodite by Golden Pass over 1m4f and is short enough in the betting.
I would rather take a chance on the tough and hardy Tribal Craft, who looks a cracking price at 15/2.
Her stamina looks strong, and with rain forecast today, I am hoping we get some soft ground at some point, although Doncaster is a track that never gets too testing.
She landed the Group 3 Bronte Cup at York in rain softened ground, running a couple of closing splits above 11 seconds to make up her yards and finish her race off strongly.
Her staying power was advertised again with a fine second behind Wonderful Tonight in the Lillie Langtry at Goodwood. That looked a true test run at a fast pace, and that was near a personal best. The selection met all sorts of trouble in the Ebor last time but she has improved a lot this term.
News could be the headline act
The 15:45 looks a two horse race between Motawaajed and Modern News, and my preference is for the latter who created a good impression as a juvenile last term.
He beat his more fancied stablemate Noble Dynasty on his Newmarket debut, who has won a handicap this term off 91 and was subsequently pitched into the Chesham but didn't see out the trip in soft conditions coupled with a stiff finish.
The 3yo made a belated debut for the season at HQ last time, travelling in the style of a well treated horse winning from 90 with a bit in hand and a big gap back to the third. He produced impressive sectionals in the middle part of the race recording 10.80, 10.86 and 10.70, all in the hottest chunk of the contest.
Trainer Charlie Appleby struck at the meeting yesterday with Modern News' half-brother Modern Games - who won a Nursery easily off 90. The selection is well up to defying a 6lb rise following a gelding operation, with the yard kicking 34 3yo turf winners this season and 32 placed with a 29% strike rate. That should be enhanced with today's pick and also Hurricane Lane - who runs in the St Leger on Saturday, a race previewed by David Cleary.
