Bets of the Day: Cape Bunting a worthy favourite at Sandown

Cape Bunting can make it four winning favourites in a row

It's been a profitable week for Alan Thompson so far and he is looking to go out on a high with two selections from Sandown and Doncaster...

"Although she is stepping up in class today there has to be more improvement likely, she looks hard to oppose."

Back Cape Bunting @ 11/4 in the 15:05 Sandown

15:05 Sandown - Back Cape Bunting @ 5/2

This two-year-old listed contest has gone to the favourite for the last three years so listening to the market could well be the way forward here and at the time of writing it is Cape Bunting that leads the pack. Trainer Mark Johnston must have had his eye on this prize for a while as he had a few talented fillies entered here at the early stage but has decided to rely on the unbeaten daughter of Cape Cross which may be a clue in itself. Last time out she won by a length-and -a-half at Newmarket in June and then followed that up with a five length victory at Musselburgh, pulling clear of the field over this trip and although she is stepping up in class today there has to be more improvement likely, she looks hard to oppose.

The main danger to the selections could come from one that has been backed overnight, So Hi Society from the small but capable Archie Watson yard. She is the highest rated filly in the field but as only half of them have official ratings I am not too concerned about that. She won her maiden at Chepstow over six furlongs on softer ground in June and then the daughter of Society Rock stepped up to listed class finishing third and then sixth in group company. Both those runs were over six and she was staying on at the end of both, suggesting the step up to today's seven furlongs should suit and she could be the one to chase Cape Bunting home.

19:50 Doncaster - Back Miss Sheridan @ 7/2

This is a very interesting handicap at Sandown tonight and case can be made for almost any of the seven runners with the outsider of the field priced at 10/1 it really is an intriguing contest. However, trainer Mick Easterby is as shrewd as they come and I like his three-year-old front-running filly Miss Sheridan in this. He has already managed to get her head in front in three of her five starts and she gets in here off a mark of 77 and bottom weight.

The reason for that, of course, is because this is a big step up in class and quality but she is going well and if Cam Hardie can get her out early and gets an easy lead she could be difficult to peg back in this ground. She certainly arrives here with some pretty solid form, albeit in lower grade, having only finished out the frame once in those five outings and the step back down in distance certainly won't inconvenience Mick Easterby's filly.
