Alan Dudman is back for Sunday's racing, and heads to the sand at Southwell in search of a big price winner....
"He stays 7f, but I think his best trip is 6f. Last time out at Ayr he didn't see out the 1m distance in deep ground, so we can put a line through that."
15:05 Southwell - Spectre looks pearl of a bet at huge price
This is the race of the day on the Fibresand, and it looks wide open. I toyed with the idea of putting the outsider Magnus Maximus up at 28/1 on the Sportsbook - he has an outside chance, and he's running off a winnable mark considering he's been in some deep races this season.
He's a front-runner too, drawn in 8.
But I do like Pearl Spectre despite a most uncharitable draw in 11 for another horse that likes to kick on.
He featured in a decent handicap last time at Chelmsford, and today's jockey Nicola Currie did the right thing there in taking up a forward position from a wide draw. The six-year-old paid for those efforts late on, but that was a good race.
Dropped another 3lb, he is up to this class, as he scored in a 0-105 in March, and is simply a much better all-weather horse.
As a son of Street Cry, it's no surprise he handles this surface, and has form up to 1m here. Currie has a poser from a wide draw for a front-runner, but he might bounce out early and grab the rail. He can slow it down and kick again, he has done that before.
16:10 Southwell - Bastiman's Bold worth a look on the sand
The Rebecca Bastiman team had a nice winner at Redcar on Friday, and I am hoping the yard can strike again with Be Bold.
There are plenty of positives - as he looks seriously well handicapped from a mark of 54 for today. That is low, considering he was running at Newcastle in March from a rating of 69.
He had the speed to win at Catterick over 6f (today's trip) in the summer, and he won that quite easily from 60. This represents a drop in class, and he races today from a 4lb lower mark for the switch to the all-weather. I do like top weights down in grade.
Be Bold stays 7f, but I think his best trip is 6f. Last time out at Ayr he didn't see out the 1m distance in deep ground, so we can put a line through that.
With cheekpieces off, hopefully he can perform better than his previous try at the track now he has Luke Morris on board.
