Bets of The Day: Freddie's Portrait will look a picture in the winners enclosure

Alan got both of his selections home yesterday for a tidy profit, today he is off to Carlisle and Ludlow...

"put in a much improved performance when upped to three miles on his second start at Kempton last month"

14:20 Carlisle - Back Freddie's Portrait @ 5/2

Each-way backers will hate the fact that only seven go to post in this competitive handicap chase at Carlisle, but Freddie's Portrait looks to have a great chance to get off the mark over fences. A winning point-to-pointer who ran well in defeat on his last two appearances, when finishing second on both occasions. The form of his latest second at Ayr in January was franked by the third Holeinthewall Bar winning easily on his return to Ireland. Donald McCain's eight-year-old should have conditions to suit and he looks to be the one to beat today.

Winners have been hard to find for the McCain yard recently, however, recent signs have been slightly more encouraging and this lightly raced eight-year-old traveled really well tanking along at the head of affairs in the attritional ground at Ayr. I think this Class 4 handicap is well within his capabilities and he has the size and scope to make an exciting chaser for the future.

16:50 Ludlow - Back Beneagles @ 9/4

Beneagles was bought for £50,000 after finishing runner-up in Irish maiden point and was then pulled up on his first start for Alan King but then put in a much improved performance when upped to three miles on his second start at Kempton last month. The horse that beat him last time out was the multiple winning, 139 rated Ballymalin and if he can run to anything like that today he should have the beating of these.

The King team seem to be getting their horses running well as the festival approaches with 13 of their last 27 runners (five winners) over the last two weeks being placed and with Wayne Hutchinson in the saddle everything looks to be in place for a big run today. It is an interesting heat and as with most maidens the market should be a good indicator as to how it will perform and our fate may well be known before the off but at the prices available now he looks an attractive proposition.
