Bets Of The Day: Strummer set to rock at Carlisle

Kevin Ryan's Strummer can light up Carlisle on Wednesday

Alan Dudman picked out two winning selections yesterday, with Yeeoow's victory at 5.805/1, and a successful odds-on place lay. Moving on to Wednesday, our man has two horses to follow for the day's action...

"We have a ton of exposed runners with not many successes, but there could be a bit more to come from Kevin Ryan's Strummer - who tries five furlongs for the first time in his career."

16:30 Bath - Filly can make her mark handicapping

I'm not a huge fan of Bath as a punting track, and races are tough to crack at the venue. Although one of my favourite-ever characters in Vhujon won there on debut, and he was a rattling good horse in his younger days.

Amanda Perrett's Entrench has a long way to go to match the mighty 'V', but I'll take a win for the three-year-old filly on Wednesday.

She makes her handicap debut from a mark of 74, and she travelled well for a long way in a much-improved performance at Kempton last time. The Khalid Abdullah-owned filly made the running and was swinging along with ease; but with the track riding on the slow side, she was picked off by the favourite (and 78-rated Honorina) quite easily.

Her run was a worth upgrading from a five length defeat. After setting a good pace, she had the winner that day fully off the bridle two furlongs from home.

The daughter of Oasis Dream has a decent pedigree and travelled slightly better than a mid-70s horse to make her of interest on quick ground for the first time.

16:45 Carlisle - North east calling for Strummer

I should insert a caveat emptor clause here; as this is not a good race, but finding win selections on Wednesday's cards was as difficult a task as I can remember. In fact, that Baden-Baden feature race in Germany was coming under serious consideration.

Initially I looked at Spoken Words in the Carlisle 16:45, but her record of one career victory from 50 was enough to dissuade me. Well it would do wouldn't it...

We have a ton of exposed runners with not many successes, but there could be a bit more to come from Kevin Ryan's Strummer - who tries five furlongs for the first time in his career.

The son of Frozen Power has dropped down to his lowest career mark of 62, and cost £50,000 as a breeze-up buy. So he's bred to be a little better than some of the runners in this field.

He also is a regular at the track; and a few of the contests he's raced in make for some appeal. Last season he appeared over six furlongs in a course maiden, and didn't quite get home - which is why I like the angle of dropping to the minimum.

Add to that, a run in 0-75 company from this campaign was encouraging, and I thought he travelled reasonably well but didn't see his race out - again. The trainer has opted for the return of blinkers to hopefully sharpen him up.

The gelding wasn't beaten far in a better contest when last seen. He tracked the speed, which didn't suit, and the hold-up horses came strong.

Strummer is only a three-year-old, and I'm convinced he needs fast ground. This is anyone's handicap, so I am happy to take a chance at 14.013/1. I would also consider the four places market on the exchange.
