Today Alan is backing two selections, one in the evening meeting at Kempton and the other from Salisbury...
"His last race was over seven furlongs and he was doing his best work at the finish under today's jockey Jamie Spencer."
I can relate to how the owners of Ice Royal must feel especially after this week's run of so close yet so fars - Ice Royal has never been out of the place money in each of his eight starts and after a string of second placed efforts Jamie Osbourne rested him for nearly three months. He returned to the track here at the beginning of the month, where despite being well supported in the market he finished second again to Wimpole Hall by half a length. Making it six consecutive second place finishes for the three-year-old gelding.
His last race was over seven furlongs and he was doing his best work at the finish under today's jockey Jamie Spencer. Today he is going back up in trip to a mile and with Spencer on board again, I would expect nothing different in his running style tonight. I expect he will be settled out the back abut this time produce in time to get up on the line.
Alan King's charge Master Blueyes makes the short journey to Salisbury today having well and truly left his juvenile form behind him, his three starts last year never seen him within five lengths of the winner. However, on his return as a three-year-old, where he has been stepped up to 12 furlongs, he has won two decent class four handicaps at Chester and York. And though he has gone up 11lbs for those successes (up 4lbs today) there is no reason to think the handicapper has caught up with him yet.
The King team finished third in the race last year, beaten less than a length to subsequent St Leger winner Simple Verse. With William Twiston-Davies getting the leg up today, fresh from his King George V winning ride for Alan King on Primitivo (another three-year-old middle distance horse) at Ascot last week. I think the team are looking take this prize before moving onto bigger and better races with the improving gelding.
